How to buy a new toilet seat?

How do I know if it will fit? They seem to be different sizes re length, width where the screws/bolts sit? Who knew buying a new toilet seat would be so hard!

I looked it up on the website of the manufacturer of my one. When I couldn't find anything that looked like mine, I emailed them and they very helpfully told me where to find the model number (in the cistern!) and then they sent me a link to the right one.

I made the mistake years ago of trying to just get a generic one and it kept going wobbly.
