Would I be irresponsible to move flats?

Currently renting a perfectly nice 1 bedroom flat. Hoping to buy in a couple of years but no massive rush really.

Currently pay £2,000 for a one bed. Takes me 40 minutes to get to work on the tube.

A flat in my dream building had come up to rent. It’s a one bed but almost twice the size of our current place, nicer kitchen, nicer bathroom, includes heating, and dh and I could walk to work in 15 minutes. So it’s a very large one bed. It’s £2,800 a month.

We earn enough to afford it, easily. But have so far preferred being able to save and travel more.

We are both young and child free. I think to myself that once I have kids or have pets, I’ll never get this chance again. Buying one doesn’t make financial sense (very high service charges).

What do you want to do? No way I’d pay that for a one bed, but you would it appears. Depends what you want to prioritise both now and in the mid / long term. I pissed a lot of money up the wall on booze and holidays in my youth for what it’s worth. Don’t regret a minute. Well maybe one or two…

It is a lot of money but it sounds like you both earn a decent wage. Reality is it’s an extra £26 a day, what does both your commutes cost? Also you’d be gaining nearly an hour a day. Your time has value consider it in comparison to your hourly rate.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 12/02/2024 21:49

I would. You'll be saving on heating and possibly travel too?

alexisccd · 12/02/2024 21:52

I did this when i was young to live in the Barbican - never regretted it!!

GreatGateauxsby · 12/02/2024 22:08

Do it.

A 40 min commute must be costing £300-400pm for you are your partner anyway.
Factor that in and the ability to host more at home and the cost benefit would likely be worth it for me.

It's your dream building so I would do it @zimmafame as long as you can continue to save to buy your own place in a few years.

Motnight · 13/02/2024 06:12

Do it!

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/02/2024 06:46

I'd go for it. Think of the time you'll save every day.

zimmafame · 13/02/2024 10:40

Forty minutes a day extra at home sounds good… think of what we’d all give for 20 minutes extra snooze in the morning!

Better for the old work life balance @zimmafame
