Can you not just remove it and float some wood in the space to blend with the floorboards?

@TomeTome unfortunately I think it is too late for that.

Do people tile over these things? Reconstruct the concrete and paint it???

I've got similar in our bedroom. I plan to hack out the old concrete, put new mortar in and retile. I bought some tiles about 3 years ago..

@SwedishEdith we are mid-reno. Had I thought it was an option, I would have had them put in reclaimed boards.

Your 3 year delay is a good reminder that I should not let this slip!

Take the board up for the length of the wall to the depth of the hearth stone. Hack out the hearth stone. Re-lay the boards and put new ones along the edge where the change will be more easily disguised.
