Hello!
We are currently building a house. In July 2023 we paid the full amount (over 70k) for design and fabrication of the prefabricated house but we are not yet at a stage where we can proceed with having it made and delivered.
The company have now sent us another bill for £12k saying this is due to increased steels and materials costs. I’ve just looked it up and as far as I can see, the cost of steel (rebar) seems to be about the same and maybe gone down a bit since July 2023 and from what I can read from google, the cost of building materials are also about the same or fallen.
in my contract it does say they can add an uplift to the price but it seems like they have just plucked this figure out of the air and we are over a barrel to pay it or lose a lot more money that we have already paid. (Don’t tell me we shouldn’t have paid it, we didn’t have a choice or they wouldn’t continue with the project, complicated).
Does anyone know if this is true that the price of materials and steel has gone up by 15% in 6 months? Should I challenge this?
Thanks in advance
