Struggling to find somewhere nice but affordable between Nottinngham and Sheffield

Hello!

We are planning to buy our first home using the old h2b isa which limits us to 250k.
We would to be situated somewhere around/between Nottingham and Sheffield to be close to family and friends.
We are looking for 4 beds, which obviously limits us quite a lot!
Neither of us drive so train access is ideal.

Mansfield, worksop, Rotherham all seem affordable but come with terrible reviews.

Are there any nice but affordable locations around here?

Thank you

Sheffield itself? There are 4 beds fairly often coming up at the price point around Hillsborough and sometimes Walkley/Crookes (probably on the other side of the city too but I don't check there. Really lovely neighbourhoods with a good community feel. Hillsborough is also on the tramline so you could be in Nottingham very quickly.

Newark? 30 mins to Nottingham and just under an hour to Sheffield. Trains from Newark to both, and train into London in 75 mins. Lovely historic town, castle, river, museums, architecture, wide range of affordable housing stock, great primary schools.

I personally wouldn't consider Mansfield itself but Ravenshead is considered nice

You'd barely get a 4 bed detached in Hucknall for 250k these days, you definitely aren't getting one in Ravenshead.

It's also not somewhere you'd want to live without a car imo

I was going to say, look at Chesterfield

Shipley Lakeside is a new development next to Shipley park in Derbyshire

Yep, my brother lives over this way and property is more affordable. And if you don’t drive you don’t need to worry about the crappy road networks, they’re not the best. Lovely properties, although I don’t think £250k for a 4 bed detached with 2 bathrooms is realistic these days, pretty much anywhere.
