To hate house we bought two years later

Husband and I bought our first house together two years ago. It was right after the pandemic and was so competitive to buy a house in Bristol. We put so many offers that got rejected and finally got one accepted on this house that was dirty and needed lots of work. I wanted to back out but my husband convinced me we could make it nice and it would be hard to get anything else. Fast forward two years later and I hate it still. We did a lot of work to it but it still feels like it needs a lot done. Husband always asks his family to come help and I’m fed up of having to deal with in laws coming over to stay for weekends at a time just to get stuff done. I’d love to hire some help and get it done quicker to a nicer standard. I don’t know what to do but I hate this house and sick of having in laws coming to do work that isn’t up to standard.

Tell him you want to move. Start looking for ready to move in houses. Life’s too short to be miserable.

Can you afford to get someone in to finish it all in one go? If yes just do that. Cheaper than moving!

Presumably you have no savings you could use to finish it? Is remortgaging an option?

Do you actually hate the house or just the situation you are in, with inlaws helping? Is it to a standard where you could take a break then concentrate on one room at a time?

If you really hate it, look at what you need to finish to get it sold. Life is too short to hate your home if you have other options.

I'm in the process of buying a fixer upper. Me and hubby have been renting one bed flats for years and so we know how much space we need to function. We aim to only get a part of the house done within a year and only the parts/spaces we need. The rest we will do over time. Perhaps you can concentrate on just the rooms you need (bedroom, kitchen, one reception room, one bathroom) and give yourself a timeline for these?
