Hi! I'm working on my kitchen, time to update the colors and I used some sugar soap on my walls to help remove the dirt and grease. My eyes are very very itchy whenever coming into the kitchen now and it's getting very unpleasant and it's already been three rinses I've done on the walls!!!

How many times have you had to rinse sugar soap to remove it entirely?? Thanks!

Only once in my place, have never had the itchiness. Could it be something else setting you off? Maybe open a window, get some fresh air in?

Oh dear- agree not sure it's the sugar soap. Are you eyes normally sensitive?

What dilution of sugar soap did you use? I've only ever given one rise. I'm also surprised that you're having a reaction.

Thanks everyone for your messages 😊❤️

I'm not sure if I put too much sugar soap powder in, I used 250g for 4.5L which is what I read on the package

It might have been too much unfortunately because even after the third rinse I can still see the clear water I use getting white/opaque!

That's why I feel I need to continue rinsing more and more..... up until the water doesn't get that bad!!!

That sounds about right for dilution. The next questions then would be how bad were the walls before you started, and what was it you were attempting to clean off? I.e. dirt or previous wallpaper paste?

Diymesss · 28/01/2024 10:55

Ah I have only ever used the premixed stuff you get in spray bottles

Thank you again 😊

I wanted to clean off dirt and grease from the painted walls of my kitchen, no wallpapers involved, I read online this was a good way of doing it before putting new paint on the walls!

I feel I'm still rinsing off the soap itself from the walls now.... It does seem like a really strong ratio of powder for water? I used the mixture from the same bucket for cleaning off my kitchen extractor fan while I was at it 🤣 and could see lots of stains of soaps remaining for a while after each rinse!

I just checked the screwfix one and it is 50g per 2 litres, so you may have made it too strong. Just keep rinsing with warm water.

I assume the dirt came off fairly easily?

I checked the package again and it mentions 250g with 4.5L for "application paintwork" and 125g for 4.5L for "Household cleaning", that's from the B&Q brand Diall

The second ratio seems the same as Screwfix, this would have been much better if I had known to pick this one!!

The box does mention it can cause serious eye irritation, so I'll keep rinsing and rinsing...... hopefully that will work eventually 🤞

Thank you ❤️❤️

B&Q and Screwfix are the same company, so it's probably the same stuff.

I'm sure it will be fine. Give it a couple more wipes down, then leave it to dry.

Thank you! 😊 Going back at it 💪🤣
