Buzzing dimmer switch

We have just put in 10 led downlights in a kitchen extension on a dimmer switch. The switch is wired to pendant lighting and two wall lights on the dining room.

When the downlights are on it is buzzing and I can hear it when a few metres away.

The electrician says there is nothing that can be done and this is what dimmers do. Any ideas if I can fix it?

He's back in the house Monday so I am hoping I have a plan for then.

Maybe the lights aren't compatible with the dimmer switch? Might be you need to accept non dimmable downlights. You can get softer / more orangey LEDs if you prefer. Personally I can't stand the glaring blue / white light from the brighter ones.

Dimmers do have a tendency to buzz but not all dimmer switches and LED lights are compatible with each other. Are you sure the right combination has been used? Generally, dimmers don't work great with LED lights.

This is, unfortunately, what dimmers do. My partner is a musician and won't have them in the house because they mess with his recordings.

We have a dimmable Hive lightbulb which doesn't buzz, but it's not very bright so only in a lamp.

Yes you need an LED dimmer switch if you don't have one already, we had this too. Also assume the bulbs you got are dimmable ones?

Homeyhouse · 20/01/2024 11:27

The bulbs are led dimmable ones

And it's an led dimmable switch.

Do people with downlights just put up with buzzing?

can I use not LED ones?

Dinner switches do buzz . Just how they are

You need trailing instead of leading edge dimmers. Less/zero buzz and more control.
