Kitchen nightmares! (Slightly dramatic, I just hate it 🤣)

Looking for opinions! We live in a relatively small new build house. I have real problems with the space I have in the kitchen - for reference we are a family of 4. This is our current kitchen layout. I’ve added on a black line on the dining wall as I’m considering putting kitchen units along there and moving the table to sort of central to there. What would you do? At the moment in the main kitchen part we have the fridge/dishwasher & washing machine which leaves us with very little storage space!

Looking for some inspiration if anyone’s done anything similar or has any clever ideas. At the moment on the back there we have 2 Billy book cases from ikea and a bench in the middle of them that we use for seating at our table but I’m not precious of this and would happily change to 4 chairs. I want to keep my table which is round extendable one as it’s over 35 years old and was my parents so I’m a bit sentimental over it!

I also hate my current kitchen so toying with replacing the cupboards/vynl wrapping and updating the worktop so would do the new worktops to match.

what’s your budget for the revamp?

LindaDawn · 15/01/2024 16:55

I would get rid of the dishwasher.

Could you move the washing machine to the cupboard under the stairs or somewhere upstairs? That would give you another cupboard.

Then I would get a nice sideboard for the wall between the kitchen and living room and store all your plates, bowls and cutlery in there.

That should free you a bit more space?

In your shoes, I'd spend half your budget updating the kitchen you have - painting units so you like them and updating tiles and worktop.

Then along that wall do a big freestanding floor-to-ceiling larder unit, painted to match the kitchen units - larders are super on-trend:

Something like this: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/idanaes-wardrobe-white-60458835/#content
but with loads of shelves added - you could literally store ALL your dry goods and crockery in it!

Good luck.

Could you use the understairs cupboard for kitchen storage? Get some nice shelving installed.

All other solutions I can think of involve spending a fair amount of money.

Could you replace the loo with one of those combined sink& toilet vanity units and partition off the additional space for a cupboard or two of you got rid of the separate sink?

Then you could hopefully put your under stairs bits and bobs in there & the under stairs cupboard becomes a larder

It's difficult without dimensions, but out neighbour's (in what I'd guess is a bigger space) built an entire wall of cupboards where you have the black line, and had all the utility stuff in there - washing machine, hoover, ironing board. I'd guess a fair amount could also have been plates, cups, and extra food??

It was matt, hand-less doors, so as close to wall looking as they could get.

Hi!
Things I'd consider doing..

  1. Seeing if you can move the washer, having washing in the kitchen is never fun.
  2. Look to extend your current kitchen units to the ceiling, to max out height advantage.
  3. Look at built in seating, with storage and then with shelving above. See shoddy picture, also see this
