Transom window in bathroom

Has anyone done this in their bathroom? My current bathroom is internal with no windows and no natural light. Would I include it in the list of things for the bathroom fitter to create/ source or should I get it made by a glazier separately. Non load bearing wall, windows wouldn't need to open. I don't really see them advertised as a common thing.

You'll need to click on the picture to see it 🙄

We are doing this but more to get light into the adjacent hallway, which doesn’t have a window.
I would include it in the list when you ask for quotes, as some may have the skills to do it or will be able to advise who you need to contact for this.

btw, ours is above the door, not along the wall like in your pic. The latter may be harder to create.

Our builder did our transom window. He just built a frame and ordered the glass himself for the size of the frame he made. Has made a huge difference. Like pp, ours was above the door also though, but large double doors

So you just mean a door with a window? (Sorry I’ve never heard the phrase ‘transom window’ before). We had that growing up and a new door with (frosted) window has just been delivered for our bathroom. Just think it looks nice and homey!

Transom window would be above the door.
You could have frosted doors AND a transom window

Ohhhh lovely!!! We don’t have the ceiling height for that. But would be gorgeous!

I'd like it completely across the wall like in the picture, so some tricky glass work. Can't have glass on the door as the toilet is right opposite

Read this as 'transom widow' and immediately freaked out it was some kind of new spider fresh to UK shores.

Might not be that tricky as, if the panels don't need to open, they might build one long frame with one long piece of glass, then stick wooden mullions over it. I think the prep work to the wall (removing the bricks to fit the transom, and preparing an opening and frame, was the more expensive bit.

Any chance you could fit a light well? That's what I have in my bathroom which doesn't have a window, and it's pretty efficient at letting in light. No experience with transoms, just a rather traumatic one with a bathroom with a frosted glass door (through which you could see EVERYTHING if the light was on, and I very quickly learned to do everything in utter darkness).

Yes we did one for our windowless bathroom. It lets in natural light from a hallway window opposite. The carpenter integrated it into the existing doorframe as shown.

This does make a big difference I think, as you can use the bathroom during the day just with the natural light, and even with the lights on it adds a nicer ambience. Also makes it more feasible to keep houseplants in the bathroom.

Sorry just reviving this thread to ask Op if you did it and if it had made a difference light-wise?

Not yet. Still trying to get quotes for the bathroom. I know the window is a tricky thing and expect to pay a lot for it, but the bathroom quotes generally (and also for another room I need some work on) are absolutely taking the piss.

One that likes to make it's home under toilet seats.
