Brick slip tiles in the kitchen?

Hi all,

My kitchen is finally going in and I’m picking the tiles. I keep coming back to brick slip because I love how it looks.

This photo isn’t my kitchen (apologies if this is anyone’s photo - I found it on Google!) but it’s the same unit colour and worktops that we’re having - and I want to have one feature wall of brick slip like this.

I’ll have a splashback behind the cooker - I’m just a bit worried about easy the brick slip above the worktops will be to clean? Tiles are easy to wipe over but I can’t imagine brick slip is?

Has anyone got/had brick tiles/brick/brick slip in their kitchen who could tell me whether it’s a bad idea?!

No experience but you could use a transparent Perspex splash back or a contrasting material eg we have stainless steal behind the hob and sink.

I suspect they will be greasy and filthy in no time, if real brick.

I'd look at tiles that give a similar effect. At least you can wipe then?

We have brick slip on the far wall of the kitchen-diner.
They are fairly dusty, impossible to clean other than to dust/vacuum gently. I wouldn't want them in a food prep area.

We’re going to have a metal splashback behind the hob so I’m not worried about the cooker area - but just along the rest of the worktop, I’m wondering whether it’s easy to keep clean? Or whether it gets grimy or dirty?

For example, if I’m using a mixing bowl and it splashes out - tiles you can just wipe clean. How would I wipe the brick slip with the textured brick front - is it easy to clean? Is brick slip better for people who aren’t clumsy arses (like me!)? 😂

Aah - sounds like I need to re-think the brick slip or find lookalike tiles…. I suspected this might be the case.

You just need to use a brick sealant like this - https://bricktilecompany.com/collections/brick-slip-accessories/products/brick-slip-sealant

It basically soaks in to fill the gaps where water/bolognese would soak in otherwise (not a very technical explanation). When it's dried it means the brick doesn't look any different.

In terms of dust, go for Reclaimed style brick slips as they've been knocked around so after the first couple of days of being dry you can use a stiff brush to brush the wall then you'll have no issue.

The Brick Slips are a great idea and I agree with previous comments on 'sealing', how to keep clean and the use of splash backs.
