Social housing advice

I currently live in a 2 bed apartment and have 2 children (12 years apart and one with additional needs). I'm on the waitlist for a 3 bed property but the waitlist could take years (I fully understand the higher than ever demand for social housing)

Anyway I'm looking for any out of the box thinking of what I could do? So far I've looked at buying my property and then selling in a few years time to find a bigger property but I don't think I can afford it and I don't think I can sell for a while. I've looked at renting privately but it's over double my rent. I've thought about splitting my bedroom into two rooms to give my baby a bedroom when he's older but that still leaves us with lack of space / storage and I've thought about moving back with parents in order to save £ to buy but I really don't think that's an option.

I'm open to any ideas and advice please.

Use living room as bedroom with sofa bed 🤷‍♀️ babies don’t need their own room and can stay in with you for a good few years.

Use the lounge as a place to sleep during the night the. During the day it can be a lounge. Depending how it's set up.
