Salt/water softener

New to this had a water softener installed in December all grand. I thought I wouldn't need salt in my dishwasher anymore? But the salt sign is appearing now,does this mean its not installed correctly? Or do I still need salt.

The salt sign just means that the salt compartment is empty. The dishwasher doesn't measure the salt content of the water, you're supposed to program it depending on the hardness of your water supply so that it dispenses the correct amount each wash. If you're now using a water softener then you can just ignore the empty indicator light.
