Council/Housing Association Shortlist process

I have placed a bid on a property but it won’t close until 2 Jan 2024. Therefore I expect my rank to fluctuate. How do the council or housing associations shortlist? Do they take the first 3 people or the first 5 or the first 10?

What is the shortlist eligibility is it automated by the system or do staff manually draw up a shortlist?

Has anyone ever been offered a new build property ranking 11-20? I’m interested in a few mixed estates with new builds I’m currently ranking top 10 and top 20 however as mentioned I would expect that to fluctuate.

Are there a few properties? As in, a row of new houses? I know of someone who was ranking 11-20 and got a house out of 6 available, and for my current house I was initially 18th but the criteria meant that I was offered 1 of 2! When there are several houses available I think that top 20 is good enough to be in with a chance.

@Butfirstcoffee3 thank you so much for your response. That has made me feel so positive thank you x

I was in a similar situation to @Butfirstcoffee3 when I went into a new build estate and there was a few houses Available.

Good luck!

Even if you're lower on the list, you can still get an offer. They take the property down and then check all those through who have bid manually to make sure they are eligible. The computer doesn't necessarily do it correctly.

@stomachameleon @keffie12 thank you my lovelies fingers crossed I get an offer xx

I can offer no advice OP but I was just wondering - do you have to pay to place a bid. Or is it just that you say you would like that property? Can you bid on more than one?

I wish you very good luck and hope you are successful.

Balloonhearts · 03/01/2024 09:41

There is no point calling. Just wait and see. They can't do or tell you anything if you do call. It's a matter of waiting for the people ahead of you to be contacted. If they do not respond in a timely manner or are uncontactable, no longer eligible or refuse it for some reason the next person on the list will be contacted.

Once I started getting in the top 20 I was offered somewhere within months. Had to turn it down as it wasn't suitable and was then offered another place within weeks.

Livinglife86 · 03/01/2024 09:41

@FiveShelties thank you so much. You don't have to pay to bid. Bidding is registering your interest.

Unfortunately I was not made an offer for the bids I made. Better luck next time I will keep trying x

@Livinglife86 thank you, I was just thinking it would be awful if you had to pay. I am so sorry you were not successful, it must be really stressful for you. I suppose there is a chance that someone successful may turn one down.

The housing situation is definitely really tough at the moment. I live in NZ and we have people living in cars and families in motel rooms as there are not enough rental properties.

Livinglife86 · 03/01/2024 09:51

@FiveShelties it is very hard but we must persevere! The perfect house will come up at the perfect time. It is so awful people are sleeping rough in their cars. It makes me grateful for the little that I do have x

@Balloonhearts that is so inspiring! I'm glad you got the perfect place. I did call up and found I was 4th place.

I feel very confident that God willing I will hopefully be housed this year.
