Having a buy to let before owning own home

Has anyone done this? A relative has proposed they transfer a property to me as an early inheritance. I’d like to mortgage it to renovate and add value and then hold on to it and rent out. It’s a purpose built flat.

We can’t afford to buy where we currently live (would cost £1mil+) so we rent. We don’t want to buy yet as may have to move overseas for work at short notice.

No reason they can’t. You’d have ownership of the home and can then do with it as you wish. My other half had her mum transfer a buy to let to her before we met and then we brought a house fill together a few years after. Any deprevation of assets considerations or no immediate care needs incoming?
