Damaged new quartz worktops 😭😭😭

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 16:25

Fitted a week ago, and idiot here decided to use a child’s eraser to remove a stain that wasn’t shifting. It was a hard rubber that obviously has left abrasions on the counter top - a big, long streak. I’m devestated. I’ve messaged the countertop people but they are off until Monday. Can someone please tell me that they’ll be able to buff it out so I don’t spend the weekend crying?! Pic attached

need a close up but unlikely

on the plus side…. in time your annoyance will fade.

8 years after a glue gun accident on beautiful new granite counter… i can almost look at it without seething!

TheFlis · 15/12/2023 16:29

A rubber should not damage solid quartz!

alwaystroubleonmn · 15/12/2023 16:33

Try Jif or is it called Cif now - that was recommended by expert milestone cleaner.

bellsbuss · 15/12/2023 16:35

Get some bar keepers friend, I had curry seep into our quartz work top and it got every last bit out

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 16:37

You honestly can’t see anything at all close up. It’s when you look at it from an angle that you see that mark.

it was the hard end of a child’s rubber which almost feels like fine sandpaper 😭😭😭

A rubber shouldn't permanently damage quartz. This is strange! We use Barkeepers Friends on our quartz worktop and it removes every stain.

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 16:38

But it like a smear of microabrasions, rather than a smear that needs to be dissolved with spray if you get me?

Will definitely get some bar keepers friend and see if that helps!!

Does barkeepers friend not make it dull as it’s abrasive? Or is that only the powder version?

bellsbuss · 15/12/2023 16:44

@gluenotsoup no it doesn't , it's like a miracle in a bottle.

orangelotuss · 15/12/2023 16:47

Oh no it feels awful!
I knocked the whole corner off our granite worktop.
We have accidental cover with our insurance and honestly they came and repaired it you'd never know so I'm sure they will be able to help/ advise.
Good luck xxx

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 16:50

Oh I never thought about home insurance!! That’s good to know in case we do need to replace the whole bloody thing!!

Wife of kitchen fitter here. DO NOT PANIC. One hundred million % they can buff it out. They use sandpaper that is something like 2000, 3000 grade. Seen it done at least 10 times. Rest east. Will be fine. Enjoy your weekend x

You can buy the bar keepers friend spray on amazon, never seen it in the supermarkets (or tried the powder version) but never come across anything its not removed from our quartz worktops…it’s magic stuff! hate the smell though!

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 16:55

@Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk I literally love you. And this has made me cry tears of relief xx

@user14699084785 See there’s nothing to ‘remove’ it’s just actual abrasions to the surface, not dirt/residue or anything.

ElleLeopine · 15/12/2023 17:00

Do you have a nail buffing kit? Might that work? Obviously don't use the roughest side, but the buff, polish and shine sides might work?

TemporaryName123 · 15/12/2023 17:05

@ElleLeopine i would be far far too terrified to try this!! I’ve already essentially sandpapered it myself! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😢

If its the hard end of a rubber then it will have abrasive bits. It's some years since I used them, but IIRC the pen erases actually rub a thin layer of paper off the sheet whereas the pencil ones are much softer.

So you could have micro abrasions in the surface if someone rubbed hard.

It should be possible to polish them out, but I would wait until I have talked to the experts first, otherwise you may make it worse.

I have read stuff online about Quartz being really hard, and natural quartz rock is really hard. But the worktops are crushed quartz rock impregnated in resin. And the resin is tough. But it's not that tough and can be scratched if you try hard enough. Similarly for heat. Quartz rock can take high temperatures. But the resin can't.

obladeeobladah · 15/12/2023 17:06

I would use Peek polish. They use it to buff enamel baths up

www.nisbets.co.uk/peek-metal-polish-100g/y048

This says you can use it on granite

Oh bless you. Relax. End of drama. I'm having a celebratory wine on your behalf ...

escapethemaze · 15/12/2023 17:08

please report back op. as if works…. i’ll deal with that 8 year damage to mine!!

JadeSeahorse · 15/12/2023 17:23

Not had a quartz worktop but will definitely second Bar Keepers Friend is like miracle powder.

Fantastic if you ever inadvertently scratch your toilet bowl for instance. Just sprinkle the powder onto the scratch, leave for 15-30 minutes and then flush. Scratch miraculously disappears! Can understand why several pp’s have suggested trying BKF.

Sorry for the totally useless post for this thread but worth knowing for general use.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 15/12/2023 17:26

Barkeepers friend (the powder) will almost certainly sort this out for you. I haven’t had a stain it can’t shift.
