Damaged new quartz worktops 😭😭😭

Fitted a week ago, and idiot here decided to use a child’s eraser to remove a stain that wasn’t shifting. It was a hard rubber that obviously has left abrasions on the counter top - a big, long streak. I’m devestated. I’ve messaged the countertop people but they are off until Monday. Can someone please tell me that they’ll be able to buff it out so I don’t spend the weekend crying?! Pic attached

@Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk Im on my third 🙈🙈🙈But wondering now should I try barkeepers friend or just wait for the professionals?! I think professionals as I just don’t know how BKF can fix actual damage! Also mystified about how further ‘sanding’ can repair what is essentially sanding damage, but having looked into quartz/silestone and all that goes into it, I don’t even want to try to understand! 🤣Will definitely update on Monday 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Another vote for the liquid barkeepers friend. It’s great always got any marks out of our quartz work surface.

Plankingplanks · 15/12/2023 20:36

It will definitely be fixable. Day before our wedding a huge chunk appeared missing (apparently Mr Nobody did it) from our granite worktop. Any other time I'd have been devastated, but I was far too busy to think about so I stuck a bit of sellotape over the pound coin sized chip and went on honeymoon. Ordered some granite fixer from Amazon and DH did it while I was at work after we got back. Genuinely can't even tell where it was damaged now!

I assume quartz will be dull to start with and they buff it to get the final shiny finish. A proper quartz fitter will have the equipment to do this, it will be super fine grade stuff. It's like with normal sanding, you use a coarser grade to remove imperfections and the finer stuff to get a smooth finish. Plasterers can even do a mirror like finish if you request it. Not great for painting over though!

Update: the worktop people are coming out at some point today to see if they can rescue! They haven’t said if they can or can’t, just they’ll ‘do their best’ and that ‘there is always hope’! I’ll update you lovely lot as soon as they’ve been! 🤞

Can I ask what make of quartz you have please. We are trying to decide now.

floofbag · 20/12/2023 09:46

Magic sponge.

NatMoz · 20/12/2023 09:52

I am totally invested now in your quartz worktop. Prayers it'll be sparkling like new once the people do their business!

We have a quartz too, very similar to yours. Definitely use barkeepers for tea stains/mess. It works wonders

obladeeobladah · 20/12/2023 10:02

Update please OP!

A rubber should not damage solid quartz!

This is my thought too!

I was about to says congratulations for damaging quartz because that’s almost kinda impressive!!! It’s so solid!

Its hard to tell from the picture but it doesn’t really look particularly damaged more that it just needs a clean and buffing out?

FastingBitchFace · 20/12/2023 10:22

I'm joining the legion of supporters here, OP, thoughts and prayers for the wellbeing of you and your worktop (which looks beautiful, BTW).

I’ve got quartz worktops and I had a different kind of issue with mine when I first got them. Usually ring marks left from chilled wine. It was like a shadow and you could only see them when the light fell in a certain way. They eventually went away. I was able to disguise them with this amazing product from Lakeland. It truly is a wonder product for quartz and I’d really recommend it. It’s quite pricey but I found a can lasts a long time.

Don’t use a magic eraser as they’re really abrasive.

They are here now! Said it’s 50-50 it it can come out, and that the process may slightly dull the area but if it does they’ll buff the rest of island to same sheen (don’t like sound of that!!!!). But will update - I’ve had to nip out to GP (worst timing!!!) so am itching to get back!!

For previous poster, it’s Silestone quartz

will update asap

A pencil eraser wouldn't but a pen eraser would.

Pen erasers are basically rubber impregnated with micro abrasives (hard particles). Using them is like using sandpaper.

Quartz really isn't that hard. I had some offcuts and tried scratching them with a Stanley knife. It is fairly easy. It's because "quartz" worktops are not made of solid quartz like granite, but are a mix of quartz rock and polymer.

They will repolish the surface, hopefully removing the micro abrasions.

I have my candles lit and am praying for a successful outcome.

TemporaryName123 · 20/12/2023 16:14

Guys……SHE HAS BEEN RESTORED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so so happy!!!

if I look SUPER hard, in a very specific angle, with the light a certain way, I can see a very very slight dullness over the area that was worked on. But genuinely at this point I don’t know if my eyes are just trained to spot that area! No one would ever know it happened!!!

Their advice: a very gentle rub with CIF kitchen clean (with the green side of a sponge). Do not rub hard due to the micro crystals. Gentle circular motions.

They got some laugh about me doing it; they thought it has been a child! Said it was the first time they’ve come across ‘damage by eraser’ 🤣

Thank you so so much for all your tips, consolations and support!! ❤️
