Has anyone ever painted a fridge?

Hi, we're buying a fridge freezer, it's an odd size to fit in an alcove so we've had no choice over the colour. It's silver. I'm wondering about painting it another colour to fit in with our kitchen, but worried it might look really naff.

Has anyone ever painted a fridge or freezer? Any tips? Or should I just accept that it's silver coloured and learn to live with it?

Would stick-on vinyl work?

Very timely, I saw a video pop up yesterday on face book of someone vinyl wrapping a fridge. Looked pretty good on screen, but no idea what these things look like in real life!

I don't know about vinyl wrapping a fridge freezer but I vinyl wrapped my work surfaces and thought it was fantastic. Very pleased with the results and cost next to nothing especially compared with getting them/the kitchen replaced.

Thanks everyone.

Is vinyl wrapping easy to do yourself or woukd I need to pay someone?

@BlueberryVelvet , that video is a revelation! I was thinking I'd have to buy a SMEG to achieve the look I want in my new kitchen, but will definitely try painting the old one first.

Vinyl wrapping sounds a lot trickier.

I've recently vinyl wrapped my fridge/freezer. It's not difficult but take your time. You'll need a sharp blade. I wouldn't pay someone if you are at all DIY minded.

If you are going to paint, in the video, she appears to paint the plastic "bumper/closing" strips. I wouldn't do this. Lift them up and paint underneath.
Same for vinyl wrap. Lift them up and tuck the stickyback underneath.
I'd suggest vinyl is easier to clean and more robust against bangs and scratches.

I worked in an office where we had been ‘donated’ a wallpapered fridge

I’ll recommend vinyl over wallpaper !!!!

If your on Facebook there’s a paint called Frenchic join it
in the search 🔍 just put fridge

in almost sure someone did it on there !
they have loads of lovely colour and so easy to use with no smell

Friends of ours spray painted a fridge.
Looked ok for a few years.

That video doesn't - so far as I can see - show the spray paint primer session. If any of you have ever tried to spray paint, especially plastic paint, a large metallic object you will know that it's a v. messy job and (1) you need to protect all the surrounding areas and the floor and that (2) spray paint or primer - unless very, very professionally applied with wide-angle spray (and perhaps the video poster has one of those ) tends to clump and run downwards in streaks (gravity, innit).

Personally, I prefer the black fridge.

Also, I know that the video poster says she will post an update on the durability of her pink paint - and I genuinely wish her well - but how will any surface paint withstand the routine use of household cleaners? Even my best friends wouldn't call me very houseproud, but the front of our fridge does get splashed from time to time when I'm cooking and so I wipe it with a clean rag and some eco-cleaner.

ClematisBlue49 · 13/12/2023 19:39

Good points @nameXname . The Frenchic paint might be the best option then, as it appears not to need a primer and doesn't show brush marks according to their website. I really like the Teal.

I ordered a fridge and didn’t check the colour, it was grey.
we painted it white, no problems. No drama.

Did you have to prep it? And what sort of paint did you use?

Thanks @Windmill34 . I've had a look at the French Chic FB page. Lots of ideas!
