Chose the wrong paint colour

Decorator has just finished painting our stairs, and I absolutely hate it. Chose the wrong shade of blue - there's just too much primary blue in it when I thought it was going to be more of a blue black. Would I be able to just paint over in a darker shade after the Painter goes, as if it's just the third coat, or will I need to basically start again with sanding/priming etc?

Yes you can paint over it, if it’s just walls, is it?

can you put things back into the room first and have other blue items to tie it in before you go repainting?

Sorry, I should have said - it's the woodwork, risers, spindles etc

Just paint over it - all the prep will have been done recently enough for it to be fine. I've done similar before now.

Oh no, what an absolute pain for you, doing all that fiddly painting all over again. As long as you do it soon you won't need to prep again because the colour you want is darker then the colour you have.

But why not just get the decorator to repaint it? He’s still with you, right? I had the entire hall, stairs and landing painted the wrong colour, came home from work, saw it, said ‘Ugh’ and got them to repaint the next day.

Thanks, good to know i don't need to prep it after just paying someone to do that!

Yes, DH thinks we should get the painter to do it - but I'm too embarrassed!

Maybe I'll just tell him I love it but DH hates it!

They get it all the time!

The decorator will have had this happen a million times. I do lots of decorating and despite how careful I am I still have times I chose the wrong colour.

LaurieStrode · 08/12/2023 06:04

You painted the woodwork blue?

I'm friends with a professional decorator (he's been in business 30 years.) Trust me, yours couldn't care less if you wanted to change the colour. It's a job to him; he's not emotionally invested.

Thanks to those helping me get a grip - of course the painter won't care, you're right!
