Would you test for asbestos?

Before putting nails in the walls for pictures/mirrors etc?

No noticeable asbestos in the level 3 survey we had on our 1960s house but I know many houses built then would have had asbestos in the ceiling. And maybe the walls. They've all been skimmed over so not able to visually see if they were textured.

The price is a lot though and I'll pay it if worth it but wondered what other people do as this must be an issue for so many people?

No, you would be better off checking for pipes and cables before putting nails in the walls.

If there's no visible sign, it's going to be well buried in the plaster = min risk. Many many people bought their houses new and wanted the smooth finish, never did the Artex thing. Nails you hammer in, so creating minimal dust anyway.
Just wear a mask and hoover up the dust if you're worried...

What can you see suggesting it?

Birdies · 27/11/2023 16:02

Thanks. We know at least some of the ceilings were textured (before being skimmed over) but not sure that means they definitely had asbestos in anyway. Although actually we can leave the ceilings alone if we don't add any light fittings.

It's more the walls I'm wondering about. Google says lots of different things about likelihood etc.

Do you mean you think the walls were artexed?

Birdies · 27/11/2023 16:04

@PigletJohn nothing suggesting it except my fear if it. And the fact it was late 1960s built.

We had someone remove all the existing wall plugs etc and refill them and then I started worrying as hadn't checked the walls first. A bit late for that now but not too late to check before putting new nails in. General view from family is I'm over worrying and no need to check unless going to take walls down (which we're not).

No I don't know about the walls. Only that some of the ceilings had a textured pattern. Nothing to suggest the walls did too.

So why are you anxious about the walls?

Birdies · 27/11/2023 16:08

Because they've been skimmed over and so I'd not know if they were textured. And I think asbestos was in some plaster in walls?

Although the previous owners didn't worry as had lots of nails etc in.

My house was full of artex, it was everywhere. We had each section tested and only one ceiling (the largest - attic eaves) had asbestos. So even if you have artex under there it may well be fine. Really not much point in chipping away at each wall and ceiling just in case. When you make holes, cover with a damp cloth to avoid any dust spread, then wipe over and bin the cloth.

Birdies · 27/11/2023 16:29

OK thanks everyone. I'll leave it seeing as holes are needed to test anyway so may as well just get the things up on the walls.
