About to complete on first house.....

Hi my DS is about to complete his house purchase in the next few days. It's years since we bought a house.

Does anyone have a list of what he needs to do and think about?

He doesn't know who the current utility providers are. The house is empty so i don't think there wont be anyone there on completion day.

All advice welcome, thank you.

Utilities, broadband, Council tax, update address on online accounts, tv licence if relevant, insurance.

A lot of that information should be provided on the forms that the seller has to fill in, or the EA / his solicitor will be able to find out. The council website will have information on what to do when moving house.

Also, he needs to get his mail redirected for at least 6 months as there will always be something that gets forgotten, or a company that fails to update its records.

GP/dentist

Has he got buildings insurance? He should have taken that out from the date of exchange, so if he doesn't have that it should be his priority.

Weirdly he hasn't exchanged yet. It's hard to get info from him as he is currently working 12 hour night shifts and has a long commute so collapses into bed as soon as he is in.

And if the property is empty he should ask if he can go around and measure up for essentials like blinds etc - some nutters take theirs (because of course every living room window is the same size)!
