Right. Single. Nearly 40. Need a fresh start. Where shall I live?

Hi everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions where would be a nice area to live?

The deal:

  • Nearly 40
  • Single (so be nice to have an easy area to meet people in, and accessible for people)
  • Extremely unlikely to have kids (or certainly any time soon)
  • Like a village/peaceful kind of vibe (Herne Hill, Dulwich, Richmond etc). Cafes, farmers markets, parks etc
  • WFH 4 times a week, needing accees to central London once a week (but out and about on weekends)
  • No car but could get one
  • Budget around £450-£500k. A second bedroom would be ideal for an office.
Any ideas would be great to help kickstart my life :)

Thank you!

@GuyIncognito000 it's an awfully nice place! One side of high street has all the fancy independent stuff- over the bridge and you've got the more practical down to earth stuff - on the river and Richmond park close andBushy park on doorstep.

I don't live in London these days but still love that area

How about the Swains Lane area of Kentish Town/ Highgate - it's at the bottom of Highgate West Hill and is opposite Hampstead Heath. We used to live there and it's a nice combination of quiet and villagey but well connected and close to places with lots going on. Great pizza place too (if it's still there!)

Everywhere in budget will feel like a compromise from Herne Hill but would also suggest Crystal Palace as a good option.

Penge. This is £440k but an auction lot. You may be lucky. It's close to Penge East for Victoria and Penge West for Overground. https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/65824761/

That Ramsgate flat is gorgeous but there wasn't an exterior shot and though there were four bedrooms, they didn't show any of them. I want to live in it, though!

There is an exterior shot and pictures of all 3 bedrooms?

I'm an idiot - I just scrolled through the brochure, not the photos. I still want the flat!

Just bumping this up, as it's been so helpful. On all your advice, I went to explore some of these areas - and Teddington really did seem lovely.

My concerns are:

  1. Is it a place for someone single? I wonder if it might put people off when they see you live a little away from more typical young areas. Have to think about the 'radius' on dating apps.
  2. I have to get into London probably at least once midweek, and then most likely both days on the weekend to see friends. Does that become a real burden relying on that one train and then the awful (no air conditioning) Northern line?

Thank you!
