urine smell in master bedroom

We moved into our new house on Friday. Since moving we’ve noticed a strong smell of urine in the master bedroom. It’s on and off, not entirely consistent. We’ve sniffed around and it seems to be coming from the floor near where the radiator used to be (they’ve removed it which I’m now worried was an attempt to solve this problem, though the room is pretty warm so it could just be that). The room has an en suite which has been done quite recently. I don’t think it’s the carpets, although we’re going to have a scrub at them today. What could this be? They had a dehumidifier in the room when we looked round which I asked about but the estate agents never answered (I’ve realised with hindsight). We’re a bit worried about what this could be. The rest of the house is tidy and clean and it feels that if this was solvable the owners were the types who would have solved it. It’s just this room.

If the carpet was wet with urine then it could have soaked through to the underlay and floorboards below. It would be worth pulling back the carpet to see the state of the floor otherwise cleaning won't fix anything.

I would recommend a getting a urine enzyme cleaner like a pet cleaner and sprinkling baking soda on the underlay/floorboards and leaving overnight before hoovering.

Maybe someone pissed on the carpet and it soaked through?

I’d be inclined to rip it up or at least get a specialist cleaner in.

Your first step is to discard the carpet and underlay, then see if the boards underneath need attention. I wouldn't bother trying to save someon else's carpet.

Did they have a cat? Our cat is a sod for pissing in random corners of the room. White vinegar takes the smell away
