Shower in bathroom with low ceiling - creative solutions please!

In our main bathroom we currently have bath, loo and sink. The ceiling is low (my husband claims that when he stands in the bath his head skims the ceiling (if this is an exaggeration it's not by much)).

We'd love to get a decent shower in that bathroom, but because of the low ceiling need to think really creatively in order to make it work.

A few other things to note:

  • The house is Grade II listed, so cutting up into the loft probably isn't a viable option
  • We're keen to keep the bath (but ultimately would prioritise a great shower over a bath, so if the best thing to do is remove the bath tub and win back some vertical height, we wouldn't rule that out)
  • There's no spare floor space currently, so adding a separate shower cubicle isn't an option

Any thoughts / tips very welcome indeed. Thank you!

I lived in a cottage with a downstairs bathroom and quite low ceilings. We had the whirlpool bath replaced with a low profile shower tray and the plumber also suggested taking the pipe work for the shower head up into the ceiling then fitting a fairly flat rainfall shower head. It gave us a few extra much needed inches.

Could you give us the layout? It might be possible to fit a separate shower and bath in?

You can get ceiling mounted rainfall showerheads and I think some of them are flush with the ceiling?
