What has happened to this room?

Just come across a listing for a house that interests me but what has happened to the room here? A fire? The rest of the room doesn’t seem affected?

What do you mean? Are you talking about the colour difference in the carpet areas? That’s just where furniture has been, the uncovered carpet has changed colour in the sun.

We viewed this house and thought the carpet was green, the day we moved in, the bits under the sofa & armchair were actually red!

fluffi · 12/11/2023 18:59

Probably a bed and bedside cabinet, so carpet has stayed fluffy and unworn.

BlueMongoose · 12/11/2023 18:59

Carpet was a horrible colour with matching curtains but faded where it wasn't covered up by furniture? Very old carpet that had got very dirty in places? Hard to tell from those photos.

Christmasisonitsway · 12/11/2023 18:59

It's just where there has been furniture for a long time. Now sure what else you think the issue is?!

80sMum · 12/11/2023 19:00

It looks a bit like mould to me. Does it smell damp or musty?

Gloriousvoice · 12/11/2023 19:02

I haven’t viewed the house. Looking again it looks like black mould to me too. The curtains are also affected.
It’s more than carpet fading. It looks black.

I'm pretty sure that's a pattern on the curtains. They are terrible photos.

alwaysmovingforwards · 12/11/2023 19:56

Looks like damp / mould

ChristieEve · 12/11/2023 20:37

It's clearly where two single beds have been but whether it's damp / dust / dirt or fading I don't know. You'd need to view to be sure. Dust builds up very quickly under beds and if you didn't vacuum under then for 30 years then I can imagine it might look like this.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/11/2023 20:47

Carpet is due to furniture covering the black patches

The curtains are a bit mouldy due to the windows having a bit of condensation and the house not been occupied for a while

ClematisBlue49 · 12/11/2023 20:57

It looks like they might have had patterned rugs which have left an imprint? Not sure about the curtains. If you like the house apart from this, I would view it and ask the estate agent if it isn't clear what the cause is. They should be able to ask the seller and you'll soon know if they are evasive about it.

I don't see any mould - looks like velvet curtains and carpet that's had furniture sitting on it.

That's exactly what it is.

KievLoverTwo · 12/11/2023 21:22

It does look like decades of trapped dust. If you can find the same listing on Onthemarket or Zoopla, sometimes the photos are higher resolution and easier to zoom in on.

RogueFemale · 14/11/2023 11:26

Looks to me like a divan/furniture that was never moved to clean underneath (the rest of the carpet is very grubby as well). The curtains look like crushed velvet or something and it's just shadows on them.
