Asking how much they offered…

I’ve been viewing houses locally and have seen one that I like. Have found out that one of the neighbours down my road were also looking to buy that house but it fell through.

Do you think they’d mind if I asked how much they offered and if I could potentially buy their survey if they got that far? Is it too rude or upsetting…?

The couple are very quiet and keep themselves to themselves, if it was the neighbours next to me I would feel ok about asking!

Wouldn't the EA tell you?

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough!

Why did it fall through?

Given that they are quite quiet, I wouldn't ask them about money, it could be upsetting (and maybe it fell through because they couldn't get the mortgage).

Buying a survey won't protect you if anything goes wrong, the surveyor needs to be answerable to you, so you need your own.

I think I would perhaps knock and say 'I am thinking of buying x house, I was wondering if you would mind telling me if any major problems came up on the survey please?'

You might still risk upsetting them by means of it having got around that they didn't buy the house, mind you. Some people are extremely private when it comes to these things.
