Bed bugs or something else? Pic

Hello,

I have a query before I start ripping up the carpet 😭

Me, DP and DS5 travelled to Majorca last week for four nights, whilst there my DP got bit around 8 times (both legs only) and my DS nothing (they were sleeping on sofa bed)

I slept in the main bed and had no bites.
We got home 31st Nov and yesterday I woke up with bites as below in picture.
This morning have woke up with another one on my knee and the back of my knee.

They're very isolated, nothing else around the area.
Que bed bug panic, took full bed apart, mattress gone out in the garage where it's freezing cold, all bedding washed etc.
I put the duvet on the landing and then put it back on the mattress before removing out the room and there was a tiny (size of an apple seed) bug on the mattress, looked very much like a tiny wood lice, very pale brown with paler brown stripes, lots of little legs.
Didn't jump or fly, just crawled.

I've attached the bite pics below, could anyone tell me if they look like bed bug bites please?

I've put flea killer on the carpet in the room (the most thickest fluffiest carpet ever 😩)

I'm just wandering before I go out and start looking for a pest control 😂

Mattress protector currently in freezer which made my DP chuckle!

Can't tell from looking at the bites, but bedbugs do look like apple pips, so I'd assume the worst I'm afraid.

IDoNotMoisturise · 07/11/2023 12:59

did u take a picture of the bug? and where did u stay? so we can avoid

a quick image search will show you that that is a bed bug...

Desdemona44 · 07/11/2023 13:04

It does sound like possible bed bugs. Don't start ripping up the carpet, call in pest control! Order a up mattress containment cover to put on the mattress.

I wouldn't start moving lots of stuff out the room unless bagged up as if it is BBs you will spread them around to other parts of the house.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 07/11/2023 13:07

@TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy yes, that's why @sprigatito posted it!

@jamrolypolyandcustard I thought the bites tended to be in a line, or a triangle shape as the bite and feed a fair bit. But then I have heard them described as looking like an apple pip.

You need to treat absolutely everything - wash and dry at a minimum of 60 degrees. Can you put traps down too? I don't think pesticides are terribly effective which is one of the reasons for the current explosion in their numbers. It's better than nothing though.

C1N1C · 07/11/2023 13:19

It's not clear from those pics. At higher levels you get a distinctive almondy smell, but with one or two you're looking for blood spots in the sheets, poo spots around the edges, and of course, the live insects.

Thank you, this is why I've been sceptical as it's literally just one in random places on my body, DP has them a fair bit but they're all on his legs and has had nothing since we've been home.

The paranoia over this is awful!

Oh just another note, didn't know if you were from NE, I'm in Gateshead so only five minutes from the Angel of the North 😂 👋🏻

Looks like mosquito bites to me! I live in Spain; have never ever seen a bedbug.

KievLoverTwo · 08/11/2023 15:59

If they're only a tiny bit itchy and don't really get massive, might you have gnats in the house?

We've had them on and off four about four weeks. They get in through gaps in the windows. They're so tiny you hardly ever see them. The OH kept getting bitten on the bottom of his feet (!!), me in weird places like an ankle, inside back of leg, inside arm.

We know it's them because they facebomb me sometimes when I'm in bed, looking at my phone, in the dark.

Then we sometimes find one or two, dead, on windowsills.

dixeypeach · 08/11/2023 16:15

We had bedbugs a couple of years ago absolutely horrendous. These were what the bites looked like on my and my daughter (the other 5 people in my house weren't affected) the bites were bunched up on the top half of are bodies but scattered on are legs. For your sake I hope you don't have them.

dixeypeach · 08/11/2023 16:16

First pic is a baby bedbug looks like an apple seed.

We got back from majorca about 10d ago.
While at the hotel we were getting bitten - really just us adults. I had about 4 bites and dp maybe 5. Dd2 just 1.
I swayed between thinking fleas/bedbugs/mosquitos.
They were pretty itchy.
There is a lot of lakes there so mosquitos.
But also probably sand flies/fleas
Anyway i washed all our clothes and everything in suitcases etc and so far no bites here. I had one on my hip after the flight
But there are loads of stray cats and looked like hotel hung washing outside to dry.
There was one in the hotel lobby for eg
Anyway it seemed to say low risk malaria but could get dengue fever.

Were you lying on the beach?
Which part of the island?

We obviuosly didnt get close to the cats due to rabies etc.
Pil used insect repellant plug in and only had a bite each

I did read there may be fleas at the airport? But its not like there were soft furnishings?

Hi, we should have taken a plug in.. we stayed in Santa Ponsa, Globales hotel.

There was a stray cat we encountered and my DS tried stroking it (he's not been bitten at all)

My DP was bitten loads whilst away and usually he doesn't. My mum and dad travelled to the hotel we went too in Oct last year and never had this problem. It's a right faff on 😩

Anymore bites?

TentChristmas · 09/11/2023 22:46

I’d vote for bed bugs. You only need one….
Yoi can buy plastic feet things that you stand your bed frame in and they trap them if they move. I’d call in pest control service people now and ask for advice, I heard you shouldn’t move rooms as they will move and follow the warmth/CO2 to another room. People react differently with teh allergy respond so the size isn’t always indicative and in a line is positive for bed bugs but also doesn’t mean that scattered isn’t bed bugs, if you know what I mean.

Twillow · 09/11/2023 22:47

Is your suitcase inside the house/ i read they often get transported this way.

Anymore bites?

Not a thing.

I've fully cleaned the room to within an inch of its life and my mattress has been out in the freezing cold /sprayed with killer so I'm hoping that's the last of it!

It'll be mosquitoes, same thing happened to me it's like they didn't show up or I didn't notice them till I got home from holiday and I was paranoid but thankfully nothing since.
