What colour kitchen units?

We've just had an extension. I have made some choices and no need some help to pull it all together. (I'm not currently sure all my choices are good)

There are some mustard walls and some beige walls. The floor is going to be whitey-beige lvt.
So far so good.

The stove however is black and royal blue (aga style) and the dishwasher white and the fridge silver.

I am thinking of white or beige cabinets but then what colour work surface? Black?? Or is that strange. The rest of the house is 1950 sympathetic, lots of pink and black and teal.

Green

Thats a lot of different colours going on in 1 room! I would go white personally or a cream. It will age better and you can then paint the walls when you want a change.

ABCXYZ17 · 05/11/2023 07:52

Go for white. It will not age and floors, tiles, paint can be changed to freshen things up. Much easier than replacing a whole kitchen when the blue, green, light pink trends go out of fashion. Don’t have black work surfaces, get a white, sightly marbled effect one. Again, will not age. Don’t go for heavily marbled effect as this will age.

I think you’ve had good advice. I had a black granite work surface and it showed up every splash and crumb. It was glossy though, maybe that was why.

Personally I love black (or nearly black) units with a pale wood / wood effect floor (such as Amtico Hushed Oak), with a white marbled quartz worktop.

Black would also blend in with the stove and echo the black elements elsewhere in the house and look striking against the mustard.

Are you able to have integrated appliances? I think that would bring the design together.

I like what @ClematisBlue49 is suggesting. Maybe look to 50s diner styles for inspiration?

unlikelychump · 05/11/2023 14:53

Ok this is good thanks!! White with slightly marbled worktop is my first choice although I am wondering about black too. Would a different colour island be crazy?

Not planning on integrated appliances but we will aim to regularise the colours as we replace them..

*just as an aside, I'm strugling to imagine beige and mustard. Feels like.it could get muddy looking, do you have the colours you've chosen?

ClematisBlue49 · 05/11/2023 15:19

Nothing wrong with having the island in a different colour in principle. I've seen mix and match kitchens that look great, but you already have quite a few colours in there, so it could be a bit much.

Having said that, I really like black and dark blue mixed together, and it could work well with the stove. It sounds wrong, but I saw an example in a Howdens brochure and it really worked well. White units with a dark blue island could also work, or all one colour for the island and lower units and white for the wall units.

I'm also struggling with the idea of beige and mustard together, so I agree with the PP that it would be useful to know exactly what colours they are.

Thanks I'm grateful for the assistance here!
Colours are b&q Cancun and chueca

Really nice...

Now I think about it, I'd probably go for dark blue for all of the units and the island. Howdens Marine Blue would look lovely with those colours.

Thanks for sgaring the colours. My fear is blue and yellow mayblook a bit 1980s.

Look how stunning this is though, with black.

There were some really nice and unexpected examples if you look at mustard and beige living rooms on Pinterest too.

I'm worried about the 80s look too. This is where I am at.

I love the pink kettle! Yes, with that shade of blue and the mustard covering such a large space, the marine blue would not work.

The black in @Seaside3 's post is lovely, and preferable to white in my view - more restful.
