Awful smell coming from cupboard/loft

I rent my house from the council. I moved in months ago. I accepted the offer before viewing. Other than this one awful issue the house is fine.
there is a large cupboard, it has a door to the loft on the ceiling that I’ve never been in. The cupboard smells really bad. Like a dead animal or something but worse, and I can hardly breathe in it. I’ve tried leaving the door open and airing the house, I thought it would go away with time whatever it was, but it’s still really bad. I think the smell is coming from the loft because it doesn’t make a difference.
I don’t want to go in the loft especially if there’s something actually in there I don’t want to see but is there someone I can ask to investigate it

The council would send someone to look if you call your housing officer

Oldthyme · 01/11/2023 22:31

Ring the council!! Ring Environmental Health. Get help with this.

Could be a dead animal or worse.

The fact the odour doesn’t diminish and is so particularly malodorous is a red flag.

Saschka · 01/11/2023 22:35

It’s probably a dead animal - they really do reek, and the smell lingers until the whole body has decomposed.

It feels like you are hinting there might be a dead body in the loft? (“A dead animal or something worse”) It’s almost certainly a dead rat or squirrel that got itself stuck up there. We had a mouse that electrocuted itself on the back of our fridge, and that stank for about three weeks before I found it and mopped up its liquifying, maggoty corpse (DH left me to deal with it as I have a stronger stomach, DS was young enough to be interested but not old enough to help). A bigger animal would smell for much longer.

Fuckeditup1 · 01/11/2023 22:39

I didn’t want to say it incase I was accused of being a troll but I think it might be a dead body. I have really bad anxiety thought so I could just be making it up in my head but I moved in on the 3rd of august and in my old house whenever a mouse died the smell didn’t last, I don’t live in the country now I live in a town, what kind of animal would be big enough to still smell

I've smelt decomposing rats many a time. It knocks you out.

Yes when I smell it I feel like passing out

If its a council house ring your housing officer. They will sort it.

Singleandproud · 01/11/2023 22:44

Could be a dead squirrel or something, or if you have a dodgy roof / cracked tile then you could have mouldy insulation etc.

LakeTiticaca · 01/11/2023 22:57

Get the council to send someone round to have a look

Chalkdowns · 01/11/2023 22:59

Dead rat maybe? Definitely get someone to have a look

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 01/11/2023 23:00

@Fuckeditup1 Please keep us updated

We lived in a flat once and had a smell coming from the ceiling, along with a strange stain beginning to appear. I can't begin to explain the smell, it wasn't like bins or waste it was worse.
Turned out to be a dead rat.
It's probably a small dead animal.

Timegoby · 01/11/2023 23:01

my money is on a bird or a magpie

topnoddy · 01/11/2023 23:03

Get on to your council and they will sort it out as landlords

Might be something left by the previous tenant

sarahc336 · 01/11/2023 23:05

The council will send someone round to look for you, they'll sort it 😄

Mammyloveswine · 02/11/2023 00:07

If it's council I doubt there'll be a dead body in the loft! Presumably they check everything over before re-letting!!

Could be a pet that might have hidden though? A cat?

Keep us all posted op! Good luck!

sonisgrowningup · 02/11/2023 08:55

Definitely keep us posted!!

lemonskittles · 02/11/2023 09:01

Why would it be a body? Its likely to be an animal

MadamVastra · 02/11/2023 09:03

This is better than the 'I found a locked safe' !

user701 · 02/11/2023 09:05

Surely you just put a mask on and stick your head up? It’s probably a squirrel

Twiglets1 · 02/11/2023 09:11

We had a decomposing rat at the bottom of a water butt positioned just outside our patio doors once (unknown to us) and the smell inside the house was horrendous for a while. It was summer so we kept opening the doors to try to get rid of the smell. Big mistake!

On the plus side, once the body decomposes completely the smell stops. But yeah, call the council & tell them you think it’s a dead animal.

Elphame · 02/11/2023 09:17

Even a small dead mouse smells dreadful.

I’ve just found one in the airing cupboard which got caught in a trap a while ago. The mouse is now gone!

Themostimportantpart · 02/11/2023 09:23

I agree it’s probably an animal. Perhaps there was an infestation before you moved in so there may be a whole rats/mouse/squirrel nest.

dylanschicken · 02/11/2023 09:26

I didn’t want to say it incase I was accused of being a troll but I think it might be a dead body

Surely you would contact the police if you actually thought there was a dead body rotting in your attic?

I'm sure you haven't because you know it's not that. Do you not have any friends or family that's could pop up for you?

Sanguinello · 02/11/2023 19:42

Hope you find out what it is
