How to buy a toilet that doesn’t get poo skidmarks!

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2023 07:49

We are about to put a new toilet in. Has anyone bought one recently that has the right angle of back wall so it doesn’t get poo skids all the time? The only way to find out is to poo in it and I don’t think the showroom will take too kindly to that. DP thinks I’m wasting time researching this but last time I checked it was me that cleans the toilet…

I'm so glad it's not just me who has wondered about loo designs changing for the worse.

It's clear that it's people (men?) designing them who never have to clean them at home.

lilyblue5 · 31/10/2023 12:53

I spent ages researching as I wanted a steep drop and I hate cleaning (I have young children)

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2023 13:36

Thank you SO MUCH @lilyblue5 and @Wizzywoo18 for links to actually toilets I can buy! This is exaaaaaaaactly what I needed. I will definitely be buying one of those two.

DP actually has said several times what an amazing resource mumsnet is when I’ve found out various things before but this is definitely a crowning achievement for me so far 😂

loving the toilet brush controversy. We have a silicone one but it actually gets filthy which it’s not supposed to? We don’t use bleach for environmental reasons.

@lilyblue5 did you get the rimless version? Thanks

Those look good but why why why won't they show photos with the lid open?? Do they think people can't cope with the sight of an open unused toilet? FFS, it's the actually useful bit of the bog. No point showing loads of shots of lids. Show us the bit we shit in so we know if our shit is going to go in properly!!

And breathe...

I did and I LOOOVE it. (Is that weird to say?)
I have a JosephJoseph toilet brush that’s flat and silicone bobbled and doesn’t get dirty..
Can find a link to this if it helps.
My one issue with the toilet seat that comes with the toilet is that there is a tiny gap that the kids seem to aim for so I have trouble cleaning it.
we’ve not had it too long so I will replace the toilet seat. But the toilet itself I’m very happy with. Rimless and very easy to clean IMO.

Topseyt123 · 31/10/2023 15:08

Oh I hate the modern space and water saving toilets. We now have two of them in our house. They look quite nice, but there are issues with them certainly.

The flushes are more feeble and take several goes to get rid of everything. The pans I am sure are smaller and the water area and u-bends look narrower. So they block more easily. One of ours often has to be pumped with the bog brush during the flush to make sure it works.

The design is far worse than it used to be and a lot more water is needed due to the propensity for blocking and so it saves little or no water. An old fashioned toilet with a more powerful flush and bigger pan and u-bend needed generally only one good flush, so I am sure used less.

Toilets have not improved in design in the last ten years. They have become much worse. Unfortunately, you are so often quite limited in what you can buy.

Thank you for the link, we are getting this one - eeeek! Tell me your research was worth it, the back doesn’t get constant skids? I’m not quite sure what you mean by a gap that the kids aim for? Also is it hard to get a replacement seat as it’s square do you think?

I KNOW, RIGHT? The toilet industry needs to grow up and face reality.

Ones we had in a holiday let in France this year were amazing. Think they were Roca or Duravit. I'm still not clear if your partner clears up after himself though, OP. If not, why not? Just put some bog roll down before you go then use some bog roll and wipe after the flush if you don't use a toilet brush (I don't). Don't need bleach every time.

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2023 20:50

@SwedishEdith My partner has been known to forget every now and again but not often. We have a baby and a toddler and I'm more concerned about when they are fully toilet trained, as I'll be at home with them more often than him. If I tell DP that he has to clean the kids' skids if he encounters them he will do it, but left to his own devices he would care way less than me and might leave them. To be honest I was venting when I wrote that because he annoyed me by saying I was wasting time to research this, so it wasn't really a fair comment. Now that I have been recommended a specific model to buy he's happy I did!

It's funny because Roca and Duravit have come up negatively in other threads I've found. But the exact model makes all the difference I suppose, not the manufacturer.

You need one of these https://gsiceramica.it/en/technologies/swirlflush/ Pretty much self cleaning! We have Pura, but you’d probably want Modo if you want no “shelf”. The toilet seat literally just lifts off for cleaning and there is no rim at all. Not cheap, but worth it.

We have a wall hung Ideal Standard and we don’t get any problem. However, when I had a stomach upset which lasted ages, it did get nasty-I just used to wipe it off with tissue. Now we eat a high fibre, unprocessed diet and poo just goes into the water-and it doesn’t smell.

Newyorkroomwithaview · 07/02/2024 14:50

I’ve wondered the same. I helped a friend put in a new toilet in England and we thought about skidmarks – but we failed. I have one in my New York City rental and it’s great. I conjecture that it is because the resting water-level is above the likely location of the skidmarks. That softens them and a second flush will clean them off. I think I observe that this resting level depends on the level at which the waste-water exit pipe is built on the bowl. My bowl is labeled ‘American Standard 1.5 GAL> / 6 LTRS’. Sorry not more specific.

BigfootAficionado · 07/02/2024 14:59

I have never used a brush, just shove bleach down, leave for a while and then flush

Lovesacake · 30/05/2024 17:01

@Doughnut100 how are you finding the new toilet? We’re on the hunt for a skid free toilet too hence looking at your old thread and wondering how you got on

Doughnut100 · 05/06/2024 21:11

We bought this one and sadly I'm not impressed!

Please let me know how you get on because we are getting a downstairs toilet so I'm still on the hunt.

You would have been better screening your DH’s poo skid behaviour first!

The only thing I would recommend is getting a dome shaped base with no ridges as these are easier to clean.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/06/2024 21:14

PurpleWisteria1 · 31/10/2023 08:05

Ugh. People not getting it. Some toilets are worse than others and even though you go really carefully it just gets bad skid marks from anyone going. Others have a shit shelf as some like to call it- a part that comes out and catches the shit as it falls.
We don’t have a loo brush- horrible things- make me gag. So need a loo that the shit falls stright in the water.
OP just look for one that has no shelves or bends. The old fashioned ones were best as they didn’t have that big bowl part first before the water. They just went straight down. Not sure why now we have to have loos with the new shapes

I once fell down one of these as a very small child!

Oblomov24 · 05/06/2024 21:26

We never/rarely get them in our home toilet, we just pooh straight into the middle of the water and it doesn't/ very rarely leaves any marks.
Isn't that the norm?

ArcticBells · 05/06/2024 21:32

Regular loo and no skid marks in my house ever. Maybe people need to rethink their diet Confused

OhFensa · 05/06/2024 21:43

The American style ones where you shit into a big bowl of water don’t leave skids and you can also have a good inspect of where you’re landing on the Bristol scale. It can result in splashback, though.

Not sure if you can buy them in the uk.

fungipie · 05/06/2024 21:45

Changingplace · 31/10/2023 07:51

I think that’s just down to the person using the toilet to give it a scrub after use than the angle of the toilet, does your ‘D’H not clean up after himself, that’s disgusting

This exactly. The toilet is not the problem here, but the disgusting user.

Doughnut100 · 05/06/2024 22:18

Jesus christ with the judgement, people! You couldn't be more wrong.

Sorry in advance for the rant but I am going to paint a detailed picture:

My partner just did the Zoe blood glucose monitor thing and had his poo tested to check his microbiome - not because there's something wrong but because he's a health enthusiast. Our current hobby is listening to the Diary of a CEO podcasts, particularly the ones where he interviews scientists and authors who are health experts.

We are vegetarian. We avoid UPFs. We eat organic fruit and vegetables more than any other food group. Wholemeal bread, rice, pasta. I have tahini and pear on rye bread for breakfast (delicious by the way and ideal as it doesn't spike my blood glucose in the morning.) We don't keep crisps or biscuits in the house regularly, just as treats. I snack on nuts, apples, peanut butter, houmous and organic lentil cakes. Basically I have become what my teenage self despised 😂but hey I want to be healthy so I can stay alive for my kids.

I'm very aware that not everybody is able to spend this much on food so please don't think I'm a snob.

Can you please stop saying we are unhealthy. My three year old daughter eats really well and her poos still leave skids. I don't want her touching the toilet brush to clean them as she's going to wave the bloody thing around! I'm not mad for wanting a toilet that is less prone to getting them. End of rant.
