How to buy a toilet that doesn’t get poo skidmarks!

Doughnut100 · 31/10/2023 07:49

We are about to put a new toilet in. Has anyone bought one recently that has the right angle of back wall so it doesn’t get poo skids all the time? The only way to find out is to poo in it and I don’t think the showroom will take too kindly to that. DP thinks I’m wasting time researching this but last time I checked it was me that cleans the toilet…

Lol I laughed at this because I totally understand where your coming from 🤷‍♀️.
We have had a new bathroom fitted and the inside of the toilet is a really wierd shape ( I didn't notice when choosing) and the hole where the water sits is tiny compared to other toilets.
The toilet is never clean when you have two children using it who can't use a toilet brush electively.
I spend a fortune on bleach because honestly it's so difficult to clean.
So my opinion is search for a loo with a bigger hole 🤣

AutumnFroglets · 31/10/2023 10:12

Can't help you but I sympathise. We replaced our toilet and omg i want the old one back so much. It's surprising how different they are despite looking very similar. I now use bleach a lot more which I hate doing (environmental reasons).

Believe me it doesn’t need limescale….🙄

Not sure why this warrants an eye roll...!

A good enamel surface is naturally non-stick (that's why eg le creuset pans are so easy to clean) unless there's a thin layer of limescale so descaling your toilet often really does help.

I too have a toilet so I'm not sure why you need to eye roll at me like I don't know what I'm talking about, how odd

Pinkdelight3 · 31/10/2023 10:43

This frustrates me too! Does anyone know why a design would change from an old style that was much better to a dominant new style that's fundamentally flawed? Like, who the hell thought it was good design to effectively put a shelf in for the poo to hit rather than having a wider drop so it all goes into the water? And why then did the majority of the industry switch to that? Bizarre!

I wasn’t eyerolling at YOU!!! Just the skidders! We have very soft water but SOME of the household still manage them 🙄

Fryingfairy · 31/10/2023 10:46

I feel your pain, I have been looking for ages but no luck so far. I know they exist, because we had a modern wall hung in a rental which didn’t do this, but I didn’t think to take the details of it when we left.

I have had one bathroom company say I know exactly what you mean and promised to order toilets that didn’t do this. When they arrived they were the worst I’d ever seen with almost horizontal pan with tiny splash hole. Ive been to another company who just gave me examples of the same thing.

The problem I’m having is that the pictures in brochures don’t normally show the inside structure. I’m finding it difficult to filter them out. Everything in the showroom is either very traditional floor standing or with the dreaded shelf.

What makes it worse is that we lived abroad in Germany and Switzerland years ago, and a lot of people were complaining about them there then and wanted rid. I feel the British are being palmed off with these (now excess) dodgy toilets under the guise of ‘it is amazing because German engineering etc etc’

Actual poo shelves are a thing in Germany. Then you inspect your work before you flush.

I found it quite fascinating in an utterly grim way.

Maybe our loos are now being manufactured in Germany?!

wtftodo · 31/10/2023 10:47

For all the loo brush haters. Have you tried a silicon loo brush? So clean, no "cling" (bleurgh), takes two seconds to use, doesn't sit around being gross.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 31/10/2023 10:47

Some people seem to be obsessed with shit.

Icantsleepagain · 31/10/2023 10:59

In true MN form, I would love to see a diagram, complete with mathematical modelled predictive poo trijectories and angles marked. A bit like the parking threads but how to park a poo minus the skids.

ginandbearit · 31/10/2023 11:00

Line the bowl with loo paper before you poop, especially at the back if that's where it stains, eliminates most skiddies , hth

CormorantStrikesBack · 31/10/2023 11:01

Surely everyone cleans their own skid marks? Does your dh really leave skid marks for you to sort?

PurpleWisteria1 · 31/10/2023 09:22

  1. Buy the correct toilet that doesn’t get poo smeared down it
  2. If any poo does get smeared due to bad toilet design use some folded tissue to wipe it off above water line before flushing and wash hands with soap
  3. Use bleach after flushing and leave.

Yes let's all throw bleach down the toilet, I am sure that's fantastic for our environment.

ohfook · 31/10/2023 11:07

My mam's toilet never gets skiddies. No idea why but I growing up, I never knew why people bothered with toilet brushes. It wasn't until I had a poo at a friend's house that it all became clear.

Bobbotgegrinch · 31/10/2023 11:11

I've just moved house and the Ideal ones in our new build are horrendous.

Used to get grief from DP and DD about leaving skidmarks. (I do use the loo brush but sometimes you forget, or the loo paper hides it and you forget to check post flush).

However the new toilets somehow are arranged so that men leave skidmarks on the back, and women on the front of the bowl, and it turns out DP and DD are worse for checking than me!

A pyrrhic victory though, as more skidmarks is never a good thing!

I can’t have a toilet brush sitting in bleach for every loo (3 loos) we have a cat and some cats love the smell of bleach. Too dangerous.
If you don’t use bleach on your toilet brush that’s sitting at the edge of your loo, what do you use?

Older style loo by any chance?

Interesting. How do you clean it afterwards? Where does it stay inbetween cleanings?does it have a cover?

I would like to know the exact same thing. Why are all the new looss like this? Why would someone manafacture a loo that catches all the poo on the way down rather than just going directly into the water? Why? Is there anyone on MN who works in toilet manafacture / bathrooms who can help. It’s so frustrating!

ohtowinthelottery · 31/10/2023 11:30

We bought this almost rectangular Roca toilet as we had the poo problem with the new toilet in our other bathroom. The Roca one is brilliant even with DH using it.

But the skid marks we are talking about on this thread are above the waterline. That is why people are confused with what you have said. No limescale is creating this issue. In fact you could shit in a brand new loo and it would all get stuck on the shelf.

LNY1986 · 31/10/2023 11:34

Just had a new bathroom fitted (back in August)
It's not all doom and gloom with these new 'poo shelf' toilets. I think they're great 😀
Yes they do require a bit of extra cleaning BUT my poo now flops nice and quietly onto the shelf part before sliding silently into the water and therefore eradicates the dreaded splash sounds, and the wet water splashback on the bum.

I can finally use the toilet when my DP is at home without fear!

So 10/10 from me!

Limescale still builds up on the bit above the waterline. Try it and see if it helps, it does for us.

Op came on here to ask for tips, she can feel free to use them or not, mine is an easy and cheap thing to try that might help. I'm genuinely baffled why my suggestion is considered controversial.

I also use loo brushes that have replaceable brush heads and change them often - but I hate using them, luckily the bloo tablets mean skids are rare. Each flush has cleaning chemicals in the water so you can even leave a small skid and a few flushes later it's gone

PurpleWisteria1 · 31/10/2023 08:05

Ugh. People not getting it. Some toilets are worse than others and even though you go really carefully it just gets bad skid marks from anyone going. Others have a shit shelf as some like to call it- a part that comes out and catches the shit as it falls.
We don’t have a loo brush- horrible things- make me gag. So need a loo that the shit falls stright in the water.
OP just look for one that has no shelves or bends. The old fashioned ones were best as they didn’t have that big bowl part first before the water. They just went straight down. Not sure why now we have to have loos with the new shapes

Yes! The shit shelf!
Why has the design changed?
