Tea and sympathy - part 2 - celebrating small victories

As most of the threads here are full of doom and gloom and worry, I thought it would be nice to post an uplifting one.

As with the previous thread, people may not be looking for advice, it's just a place to talk, so please don't try to problem solve unless a poster specifically asks for help.

(we are stuck in a rental with many issues and, at present, it would be financial suicide to buy or move to another rental)

Our small victories this week with our terrible rental, many details in tea and sympathy, the original thread.

The fly level has dropped off considerably, so I no longer have to be paranoid about leaving a room with an unattended buttered knife for ten seconds. I still won't do more than about 15, but it's getting better.

Because the weather has turned to bleurgh, we have far less plane wankers traffic above. It turns out have lots of private airfields around us. It's nice to have less noise.

Despite the pheasant shooting tent arriving on the farm last weekend, no pheasants have yet been shot, which means the OH was NOT woken up at 8.30am on Sunday by gun wankers.

We helped rescue some escapee sheep from the road. Sheep are quite good at escaping, and despite their reputation of being dumb, they remembered exactly where they were meant to go, and did it in an orderly fashion.

(Last autumn they escaped onto our front garden!)

Whilst we have not fixed the demon underfloor heating, we may have found an acceptable solution. Input welcome. Whomever plumbed or wired the house has put the thermostat for 2 out of the 4 zones in the opposite places. 3 of them are also on external walls, which is a bloody stupid beyond belief thing to do if you live in an imaginary wind tunnel, as we do. Anyway, the two wrong thermostats are on opposite sides of the house and are wired to heat the opposite side of the house they are situated in (trust me, 14 months of living here and testing plus a temperature gun, there is no doubt). It means that when you put the heating on to a moderate 19 or 20, it gets completely out of control and the underfloor heating is on fire, because it thinks it isn't doing its job, because the area it is heating is on the other freaking side of the house. With stone floors, you can't just turn it down and get an immediate adjustment. It is either fire or not fire. Added to that, as soon as our outrageous winds hit, it doubles up its effort. The result being, you set it to 19, and 12 hours later, the floor in certain places is 32. Before we figured out what was going on last year, I had to abandon cooking, because the floor in front of the cooker was unbearable. Now I know the thermostat is elsewhere, I don't even switch it on (which is fine, the other nearby zone keeps the area warm enough).

My new measures have thus far worked: the downstairs heating now goes on at midnight and turns off at 4am. It's currently just enough of a burst of heat to stop the downstairs from being freezing OR lava like, hurrah!

I doubt my LL can get the incorrect thermostat placements fixed, but if you know differently, do please say.

Now, what small victories have you had in your annoying house recently?

We moved I to the world's filthiest house nearly 2 weeks ago. Looked like they hadn't bothered cleaning in a long time (and covered it up for viewings). It finally smells clean!

Also: weird lean to utility area had spring a leak in the roof. DH managed to clean the gutters (a bin full of crap) and fix the leak in torrential rain...

Small victories, eh?

We have to cling onto them, Fluba!

I've finished decorating the living room.

LibertyLily · 25/10/2023 13:09

Five years and eight months after buying/moving into this place, as of today we've finally got a proper floor throughout the living room (instead of a hotchpotch of old quarry tiles, more modern terracotta tiles, cement...and cavernous holes covered with plywood sheets!)

DH is - understandably - extremely proud of his achievement and keeps reminding me how lovely it looks. Only trouble is we've done it to sell, not for us - we'll be going on the market in the next week 🙄
