Hallway size/compromise

Pic attached.

We're doing a full house renovation and creating a boot room at the back. It's just for shoes/coats and a cupboard for cleaning stuff. No laundry or food.

Currently the corridor next to it is quite long and narrow (930mm).

Would you steal some extra width from the boot room? I'm inclined to increase the corridor to maybe 110cm. I think that still leaves plenty of space in the boot room but DH isn't sure.

I'd go wider if you can on the hallway. Our last hallway was just under 1m wide and felt very pokey.

I think the new one is around 1.2m and feels massive in comparison!

I'd make the hallway bigger if you're sure the boot room will be big enough. A generous hallway really opens up a house and makes it feel airier. There's something a bit gloomy and tunnel like about a narrow hallway.

Thanks, that's my thinking - it just feels a bit pokey at the moment.

If we went for 110cm corridor that would make the boot room width about 170cm. I've measured it out but it's hard to tell just with a measuring tape if that's too small. I guess the 3.7m length does allow for a reasonable amount of storage.

When we were planning a room in our house we marked the space out with chalk on the garage floor - then marked out all the furniture on it and walked around it. It gave us a much better idea of how it would actually work than doing it on paper.

We have a 100cm width corridor and we find it very narrow. You have to be single file down it. We are doing almost the same as you- losing some of our boot room to widen the corridor to 150cm. Ours is the front of the house and it’s a massive job as it’s a supporting solid wall, but the difference it will make is huge. We really could do with the extra space in the boot room too but we can’t have everything I suppose
