If everything else was better, would you have a North facing garden room?

We are planning an extra room for hobbies (sewing) and teens to chill in and I was going to put it facing West, as the options are North or West.

However it will look much better facing North and the salesman didn’t think there was much of an issue, although he understood why it was important given the planned use. DH agrees with him.

I am still concerned this could be an expensive error, does anyone have any thoughts or experience?

Wit the way summers are going I’d go north every time or it will be a nightmare to use.

For art studios (and maybe sewing) North facing is best as it has consistent light.

North every time. Ours is north and it gets so hot in the summer every door and window has to be open.

Meniscus · 18/10/2023 18:03

What time of day will you be using it?

LeefsPrings · 18/10/2023 18:05

North is ideal. A west-facing one will turn into an oven on hot summer afternoons.

North.

North.

Can it have a small side windows facing east and west?

mehday · 18/10/2023 19:08

At the moment the plan would be to put two thin high windows, one in the East and one in the South walls but leave the West one clear so we can put storage shelves/units in.

My only experience with North is the cooler front rooms of our house and the difficulty growing anything in our North facing front garden. So I thought it may not get enough natural light (obviously there will be lights but it would be nice to use the sun/daylight!).

For sewing I would hope to use it during the daytime on my days off and maybe also in the evening, the teens would likely use it in the evenings. Both would also probably use it across a weekend.

It would depend on the view….if you have a view I would be going for west-facing.

It’s a garden room, so presume it’s a solid roof? (rather than conservatory with glass or plastic roof)

I would be reluctant to go north-facing with a solid roof….unless you have a good amount of garden and natural light, not obscured by neighbours houses or heavy trees….

No view to the West (neighbour’s messy border) and bigger expanse to the South.
