First things to do when moving into fixer upper

I am delighted to be moving! There was so much we did wrong last time so I was hoping to get some advice on what order to do things in.

The house needs a new main bathroom and completely redecorating throughout. There's textured wallpaper, popcorn ceilings and flooring that needs replacing the whole way through.
In the next 5 years we also hope to do extend and replace the kitchen and conservatory area.

As an example of an error from last time, we got the keys, redecorated straight away, then about a week later realised there were barely any plug sockets in the rooms and the ones we did have were terribly placed. So this time we want to make sure we have enough plugs in the right places.

Does anyone have any tips like the above to make sure we don't miss things? What do we do first? I feel clueless and like I need help making a plan before getting the keys.

Many thanks

@Fleabaneofmylife get the joints on the guttering and the down pipes checked and for any cracks that leak. The gutters also need clearing of leaves and any other debris.

We got a quote for a new bathroom which revealed we would need a new boiler. To do this means pipework which means no new carpet for DD's bedroom at this stage as that will need to come up! Every job seems like unravelling a ball of string so reading this thread for other tips!

  • Electrics
  • boiler checked and any other gas appliances (there was a 10 year old gas heater in the living room of my 1930 money pit that turned out to be a potential death trap...).
  • Drains. I just had mine checked and turns out the kitchen drain gully needs replacing
  • Make sure you know where the stopcock is so you can turn off the water if there is a leak
  • popcorn ceiling: if you mean Artex have it tested for asbestos first before you do anything to it.

I am going to fix the gutters next as I have noticed they are leaking in a couple of places.

It never ends...

Don't put nice on carpet on while you are still having your heating system and pipes checked or if you need a rewiring done as they tradespeople will have to lift your floors...
