Paint advice - do people not really use Kitchen and Bathroom paint anymore?

Haven't painted anything for 15 years, last few times we had a builder to do it. Now need to get white and not shiny paint for the kitchen, and also the bathroom ceiling. Kitchen is very dry, no issues with moisture etc. Bathroom ceiling we have constant mould problems - actually we have repainted it with a mould reducing paint but still comes through every now and again. Can't I just get a tin of white K&B paint to do both or do I need 2 different types? A rare foray into B&Q didn't help, only a couple of types of K&B paint all seemed very shiny and v. expensive. Google throwing up conflicting advice and thousands of options of white paint. Sort me out MN painters.

I always use paint specifically designed for the bathroom or kitchen if thats what i'm painting because they will contain different ingredients to other paint to allow for water and condensation They have lots of colours What's the problem you have in using it?

@Chowtime I'd like to use the right paint, but there is very little choice on the shelves at our large local DIY store; also I want plain white and the few tins available seem to be "shiny" type finishes (silk?) - also its twice the price of normal white paint. Just made me think am I looking for the wrong thing? Should I get one Kitchen paint and one bathroom paint, two different tins?

I just use dulux kitchen/bathroom Matte

The last guy who decorated in our house says he thinks non-bathroom paint actually fares better. The bathroom we have with bathroom paint on it flakes a lot.

Chowtime · 14/10/2023 12:42

There's no difference in price online. Try there.

We used to use the kitchen and bathroom paint but last time we had a decorator do it and he said there’s no need. We just get normal Crown trade paint now and it’s been fine.

caringcarer · 14/10/2023 12:52

I just use kitchen paint in the kitchen and bathroom paint in the bathroom. I think the one I used was called natural Calico or something like that.

You might be better off spending your money on a better bathroom extractor fan.

minipie · 14/10/2023 13:23

We use eggshell paint in the bathroom.

However if your problem is mould rather than flaking paint then I’m not sure different paint will sort it, you need better ventilation.

Use Zinsser paint for bathroom. It is formulated to combat mould etc for damp environments.

Wickes will mix any colour up as bathroom/kitchen paint. I've just painted my bathroom and used their mixing service.

I spoke to Delux the other week as I am going to paint my bathrooms myself after receiving a really expensive quote from one firm and a more reasonable quote from another who couldn't fit it in until February 2024.

Their advice was to use Dulux Trade Diamond Matt - great in a bathroom according to the chap I spoke to. It is currently 25% off and free delivery over £50 at Delux Decorator Centre online.

Thank you all. I got ronseal anti-mould paint for bathroom ceiling, similar to the one we've used before. I got ordinary white paint for kitchen.

I've lived here 30 years and the mould is constant, we have two fans installed and have replastered, we shower with window open, got two large radiators in the room. Nothing helps although re-painting with the anti-mould paint gives us a few months grace. We clean off the black stuff with bleach and then paint over.

Sometimes, mould can't be cured only mitigated.
