Has anyone rented at short notice to save a sale?

Our ongoing purchase chain has fallen apart just before exchange. One option could be to continue to sell our property and move into short term rental whilst we sort out our purchase. Not keen on this but we are exploring all options. I wondered if anyone has done this and could share whether it was a good or bad decision for them, or tell us something we might not have thought of? Obviously loads to consider here.

Just interested in whether you went into rented in the end or what you decided to do.

Hi. We didn't rent in the end and kind of glad we didn't- it's taken a while to find a new property to buy and I think it would have been immensely stressful if we'd had pressure of rental agreements and that expense. We have been very lucky though and kept our buyers - I won't believe it though until they sign!

I always thought this was the most sensible way to sell and buy in England where the rules are dreadful re conveyancing.

My parents did this when they moved to be nearer me and DS. They stayed in an Airbnb for 4 months until the sale had completed on their new house. They're a bit older and found having all their stuff in storage and moving twice quite difficult, but it was definitely worth it in the long run. They could've have been in their old house another year or more before they found new buyers!

We paid six months upfront when we were waiting for our house to be built. If I did it again ( and I really don’t want to), I’d rent a one bedroom place and put everything else in storage.

We did this. House sale going ahead, Ourselves and two cats trying to find a rental in August. Ended up going to a flat miles away via air b&b. Could have been dreadful but it turned out totally fine.

We lived in three different flats via that platform over three months. it sounds awful but it was perfectly ok. A hassle but not a big deal.

For context, we had never lived in a flat and our cats had not either. Never used air b&b. I’m cautious and plan carefully. This was unplannable and it would have been easy to stay in the house and not sell, even though we had a one off buyer buying way over market. We had to seize it.

I am so so glad we took the chance, sold and moved!

we were chain free, in a hugely strong buying position and ended up being able to get eight weeks of builders work done (horrible messy work) in the next house before we moved in, having the rental saved us soooo much hassle!

the sale and short term rental were the best decision by far, even if terrifying at the time.
