Thoughts on Basildon?

We're thinking of moving to Basildon to be close to family, I'm just wondering what the town is like. Our budget is 250k for a 2 bed house: will that go far there?

Thank you

DS owns a (2 bed) flat in Basildon. It would sell for 230, so I'm not sure that you would have much to choose from if looking for houses on your budget but there are some. Some bits of Basildon are not great but they are the cheapest of course. In the town's favour it is a quick commute to London. Or lakeside big shopping centre. The town centre itself is okay and there are some lovely parks. Easy trip on the train to the coast at Southend or Leigh.

I've visited Basildon many times, for that budget you will likely only get a house in the less desirable parts. I don't think the town itself is that nice, it's pretty run down but I have seen worse places.

Loads of places asked about on here recently seem to feature highly on Britains top 50 worst towns to live in (eg Swindon, Aldershot).

Basildon isn't on there.

Have you looked on Rightmove? Try putting in Basildon and up to 250k or possibly up to 275k assuming some prices will get reduced, and see what sort of properties are coming up for the money.

I live in Basildon and I don't think it's great, town centre is pretty run down now and the crime rate seems to be getting worse. I'd move if it wasn't for elderly parents here

Dogsitterwoes · 09/10/2023 12:13

I used to live on one of the grim estates and it was awful. There are okay parts. I wouldn't choose to live there again but if that's your budget you won't get anywhere in a nicer town, and to be fair Bas as a whole isn't as bad as it's reputation. Just be careful exactly which estate. Have a good look round. The grim ones are obvious.

KnottyKnitting · 09/10/2023 12:14

Basildon is very run down. The town centre is half derelict.
Crime is high and schools are not good- especially at secondary level.

Seriously look elsewhere...

Kalodi · 09/10/2023 12:16

I grew up in Basildon, would certainly not choose to move there. I don't choose to visit it ever. Would not recommend and not sure you'll get much there with that budget either unfortunately.

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/10/2023 12:16

I've been there a lot for work and didn't feel at all safe and I've been to some pretty grim places.

I wouldn't want to live there by choice.

HappyMonday1001 · 09/10/2023 12:26

Have a look at Wickford. There’s a 2 bed house for sale next door to my friend that is in a nice area, needs some work, is up for £280k. It’s had no interest so may get reduced

NigelFaragesTinyConscience · 09/10/2023 12:28

Not the best.

ohiwanttobreakfree · 09/10/2023 16:23

Terrible place. Horrible town centre and crime rates way above the national average. Completely soulless as well

This, I spent my teenaged years there and wouldn't recommend it.

Sumtimesiamgreen · 09/10/2023 17:05

Not a good rep I’m afraid. I would not move there personally.

Basildon Fawlty, must be the posh part.

someon · 10/10/2023 00:06

I've been to Basildon today

I was brought up there my family was one of the first new towner's. Still have lots of family there and they love it ! I find having moved somewhere else comparing it I'd say ppl are more friendly there ppl will stop and chat that's what I miss re the town

It has changed over the years but that's like all places now days nothing stays to same and things move on they are trying to improve the town centre it's like most places nail shops and coffee places or hairdressers.

I think it's a great place to move to its no way as bad as ppl make out it's got great commuter links and central for other places to visit
