I'm unreasonably pissed off that there are no floor coverings.

Exposed floorboards and stone floors? How cold and draughty.

Also, wonky cupboard doors, tarnished mirrors, paint drips visible in photographs... there's shabby chic and then there's just shabby!

A few hundred quid down at carpetright would sort that right out…

I think they call it “under restored”.

I reckon you could make a nice little courtyard garden by getting rid of the “conservatory” (otherwise known as a lean to).

Stephisaur · 02/10/2023 21:16

@SabrinaThwaite I prefer the term “unfinished” 😂

DepartureLounge · 03/10/2023 00:04

I do like it but it's been ruthlessly styled and once you took out all the curious furniture and artefacts, it would just be kinda...brown tbh. No idea if it's worth the money as I'm out of touch with the London market but if that is a reasonable price it's a fucking disgrace. And yeah, cold.

ColdEvenings · 03/10/2023 00:10

Hate it. Looks drab, boring and like an old spot and sawdust pub.

HongKongGarden · 03/10/2023 00:11

This makes me a bit sad. I worked there for a decade from the early 2,000s, when these houses were very reasonably priced despite being right on the edge of the square mile.

We could easily have bought one back then, and did consider it, but instead went for Wapoing.

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/10/2023 07:41

Gosh, you moved in different circles to me in the earlt 2000s!

commonground · 03/10/2023 08:36

I love the aesthetic, but the lack of bathrooms on 2 floors with bedrooms and then a loo right off the kitchen is not a great layout. Presumably the Huguenots would have had chamber pots.

Also, ouch at the council tax (speaking smugly as someone who lives in Westminster.)

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/10/2023 08:41

Huh. You try living in Lewisham. I pay £1498 P/A for a band B property.

MuckyPlucky · 03/10/2023 08:47

Spartan! I usually love period properties but this just looks like a house of misery & back ache.

illoeu · 03/10/2023 08:53

We used to live nearby. We considered buying a house there, but there are very few freehold houses around there, it's mostly flats or some smaller houses. So it has quite a premium just for that. Those Huguenot houses didn't appeal to us (even if we had the budget) as they are all listed and high maintenance, and some of them have even less outside space. I quite liked living in the area, though we were slightly further west.

usernother · 03/10/2023 08:54

Horrible. Looks like a museum not a home. Rubbish photos too.

I was working in Deutsche Bank, and getting a good salary.

Teddleshon · 03/10/2023 09:35

The appeal of Spitalfields used to be the fact that (in the 1990's) you could buy an absolutely beautiful Georgian house for a fraction of the cost elsewhere in London and walk to the City in minutes. We looked at one in Fournier St that was £67,000 and needed absolutely everything doing to it and had a sitting tenant. It was a relatively quiet area and full of interesting people like Tracey Emin and Mark Hix.

Now it's almost as expensive as far nicer parts of London and has become hideously noisy and crowded and full of bland designer shops I really don't see the point.

SabrinaThwaite · 03/10/2023 10:25

You can find the sale photos from 2016 when it sold for £2.7 million - it was much lighter and brighter then.

Even back in 2001 it went for £877 k (£455 k in 1998).

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/10/2023 10:28

Trying way too hard! I worked in this area for 6 years in 2000s and all those houses were being renovated and then the market got same treatment.

Agreed with you on all points! When I worked there in 2000s you regularly saw Gilbert and George and Tracey Emin (especially in Golden Heart pub).

Regentrification has ruined the area but it was bound to happen.

Lampzade · 03/10/2023 10:36

Sorry that house is depressing.

Teddleshon · 03/10/2023 10:36

Yes! I used to see Gilbert and George most mornings on their way to breakfast at the caff on my school run.

Whu · 03/10/2023 10:37

Geez you could get a beautiful country mansion with land, stables and swimming pool near me for less than that!
A drab terrace without out so much as a driveway for £4 million. London is insane.

needtofatoff · 03/10/2023 12:12

Looks old and dirty.

TheShellBeach · 03/10/2023 12:15

It's horrible!

DepartureLounge · 03/10/2023 19:16

Considering how much effort has been made to stage the inside, I'm surprised no one thought to weed the pavement at the front.

Twiglets1 · 09/10/2023 10:52

I really like it. Unfortunately I don’t have a spare 4M.
