Can't have patterned carpets on stairs apparently??

We went to a carpet shop yesterday to pick bedroom carpets and while there enquired about stair/landing carpet. I mentioned I was inclined towards a pattern and the woman immediately said patterns and stripes don't work on stairs where there's a turn/curve. She said looking down the way it looks ok, but looking from bottom up it wouldn't line up and wouldn't look great.

Is this correct? I understand what she means of course, but then again I'm sure plenty of people have patterned carpets on their stairs. Is that just when it's a straight run?

I've been so disappointed by stair carpets and finally found a nice geometric design so this is quite disappointing.

If you have a lovely non-wonky patterned carpet on your stairs with a curve/turn please show me it's possible!

McPancreas that’s the nicest carpet I have seen.

I didn't know this was a thing. I got patterned as it's less noticeable when it's dirty as it gets lots of foot traffic

They're your stairs, of course you can have what you want. I've had dark red patterned carpet on the stairs in my last and current house and it's been a godsend. Stairs are a high traffic area and where cups of tea/coffee are most likely to get dropped. (Ask me how I know ...) Dark/patterning hides a multitude of sins.

Remember pattern does not have to be stripes or checks. Our last carpet had a sort of paisley pattern and the current one has a crest design. If the fitters are angsty about matching stripes, another sort of pattern might work for them.

Another thing I'd say, get the most expensive carpet you can afford for the stairs. It's well worth the investment.

The brand is Devine Savages, my grandma had it and it looked awful because of the way it was laid.

Thankyou

@McPancreas severe carpet envy here!

OP, if they are trying to talk you out of it, it might be because they know their fitters would do a naff job, so find someone else to fit it. One that doesn't umm and aaah when you show them your choice.

My stairs are like this, with a stripy runner.

I'm also in Scotland @Vera1234, just outside Glasgow so if you are close by please to let me know! You clearly have good fitters.

@McPancreas That is the greatest carpet of all time. I love it!

BoardTopChair · 01/10/2023 19:18

Always try to use local companies. We use a lovely local carpet shop, never national chains. It does come down to the competence of the fitter. Pattern matching is best, there are lots of google images for patterned carpet with a turn. I would be very clear by providing photos via email to show what you are expecting from the fitting.

McPancreas · 01/10/2023 19:38

Funnily enough the company we engaged to fit it were rubbish, it was sheer luck they knew a fitter who lived down the road from us who was an absolute carpet wizard who knew what he was doing!

Thanks to all for the lovely comments, my wife has great style when it comes to decorating.

For those interested it is Deco Blush by Devine Savages.

Go for it OP, best of luck
