Getting ready to exchange what do I need to know?

Hello,

So, we are about to exchange and complete over the next 2-3 weeks…

What do I need to know/do to get ready? I’m a little lost on how bills etc will work. We’ll be moving our stuff in to the house but living with family while we carry out some work!

you need to take meter readings of the place you are moving out of. Take readings for your new house on the day you get the keys into -water, gas, electric-and contact utilities with the date the property became yours. Don’t forget to contact the council for council tax.
When we sold a house we had the council suddenly send us an extra bill a few weeks later for money owed for where we had moved out of. When I phoned them to ask why they said the new owners had told them they moved in a few weeks after we moved out. When I explained that, whilst that may be the case because they were staying with family then going on holiday before actually moving in, the house was actually theirs from the date I provided. The bill we had been sent was cancelled and added to their council tax.
Don’t forget internet provider too.

It can be quite an arduous task - most companies allow you to notify change of address online.
For gas, water and electric suppliers you’ll need to do meter readings where appropriate to ensure you aren’t billed incorrectly. Set up accounts with new suppliers at the new property.

let the local council office know you are moving house for electoral roll and council tax purposes.

You would also need to update your address and details on your home insurance.

Arrange for broadband/TV/ phone services to be transferred across to your new address. I know with sky this can take a few weeks so if you rely on broadband, I’d be getting this done asap.

All other address updates can be done once you’ve moved in.
