Any ideas of how to design this kitchen space?

Hi

Would you help me solve a design issue?

Originally we were not planning on having an island. However, things have changed a bit, which means it would be a sensible addition given a change to how the space now works.

The issue we are facing is about where to locate the fridge, freezer, hob and sink.

Currently we have them as per the second image but the position of the fridge and freezer seems a bit obstructive when you enter the room. We want something less jarring on that left hand side wall. We are struggling to arrange the hob, sink and fridge/freezer in an efficient triangle without having to make a journey from one side of the room to the next (like we currently do).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Just rough pic (bored at work!) but I’d ditch the central island and open up the space. Go for a L shape. Get a venting hob which eliminates the need for an extractor. Extend the worktop of that return so you can sit at it. Depending on your fridge freezer, if separates you could have tall integrated at each end of a breakfast/coffee station/pantry section. Or you could put ovens here. You could then put extra worktop/cupboards between the two door entry points or something smaller like a wine fridge to keep those entry points nice and clear.

@CasperGutman that an F and F for fridge and freezer.

Thanks @AuroraForever. There's not much prep space but am I reading your design wrong?

Is the prep space either side of the sink essentially?

One other thing and I don't know how others feel about it but I am not sure whether it helps to have bar stools for an island or peninsula when a dining table is just a step away. It does help to keep a conversation in the kitchen and for people to be able to rest their weary legs. How much do you use your bar stools if you have a table just a foot away?

I have my hob and sink on same wall, maybe just over a metre of worktop between them. Works well when you have to drain veg or pasta. Then our island is clear

Yes I’m a big fan of the hob and sink being on the same run - we have just under a metre between ours and it’s very convenient. The island is clear so used for all prep work or baking etc also handy for buffet

we have 2 stools at the end which kids use for breakfast and I sit at when wfh or doing other things. Much preferred to the table!

CasperGutman · 22/09/2023 18:20

We felt the same about the pointlessness of uncomfortable stools at a counter just next to a table. We have a massive long farmhouse style table seating twelve, just a metre from the island, and didn't bother with any stools.

Could you put your freezer in the utility room or would that make any difference?

All the time. But then, our bar stools are probably comfier than our dining chairs, plus the dining table always seems to be covered in kids’ craft, homework etc.

people perch on them when I’m cooking, so I’m considering taking them away….it appears I prefer cooking without people perching at me.

but we rarely sit and eat at them as there’s a table with a view.

We use our bar stools a lot, even though they are feet from the table!

I sit on on while DH cooking & vice versa, tend to have lunch sat on them, early evening when the door are open & nice weather we sit at them & have a glass of wine.

Just seems to be a different vibe than sitting at the table.

As an update, we will be putting the hob on the island.
