I heard a noise in my front room ceiling cavity a few months ago, it sounded like scratching and running, I didn't hear it again until last night, lasted about 10 ministers then nothing. It's really quite loud and frighting and driving my anxiety mad.
I thought it could be next doors dog scratching but I'm really not sure

What’s above the front room?

Could squirrels or rodents have got in?

PerfectMatch · 17/09/2023 05:49

Maybe mice? You could call a pest control company.

heidihigh · 17/09/2023 05:50

We had this when we first moved in. It turned out birds had got under the roof tiles somehow and were nesting. Not sure it's the right time of year for that (may be wrong) but ours sounded exactly as you describe.

dewisant2020 · 17/09/2023 05:52

@PickledPurplePickle my bedroom is above the lounge, I really am not sure. I would have thought the noise would be everyday if a rodent had got in?

@PerfectMatch is there anything pest control can do if it's in the ceiling cavity. I am desperate to sort this out as the thought off it makes me feel sick with worry

We had mice and they made a lot of noise! It sounded like they were dragging cables about in the loft and it happened at random times of the day. We put traps down which caught 3 snd then blocked up a hole where we discovered they were getting in. The noise was quite frightening and I was surprised that it was only mice.

Mollymalone123 · 17/09/2023 06:01

Yes pest control can sort it for you. We had similar with birds finding a gap and they are surprisingly loud as are mice. Put your mind at rest and get someone to come out and have a look for you. Squirrels birds etc can find gaps in eaves roof spaces and get in the voids . Also where we heard noises it literally sounded like they were walking round the ceiling but in fact they were further away in roof space. Try not to worry

dewisant2020 · 17/09/2023 06:01

@stepfordwifey the sound is awful I've got visions off massive rats being up there. I will call pest control tomorrow to come out. Just hope they can get to the bottom of it without having to take all my floor boards up

@Mollymalone123 thank you, I will call someone out tomorrow, just to put my mind at rest.
I've never had this before and it's a rather uncomfortable feeling, I couldn't sleep last night as I was so worried

We had this and I'm afraid it was rats. They were nesting in the loft but using ceiling and wall cavities to get in and out through the tiniest hole. Pest control sorted them out but we did have to dispose of the bodies.

Caitlin991 · 17/09/2023 06:28

I remember when I was living at my parents I would hear this a lot in the ceiling above my bed. Everyone thought I was mad and ignored me, turned out it was a family of mice. Definitely worth getting it checked :)

SuddenlyOld · 17/09/2023 07:26

We had this and it was squirrels. Do you have trees and squirrels near you? They didn't stay long fortunately, lasted a week or so

BlueMongoose · 17/09/2023 20:57

We had it, it was a mouse. So no big deal. Whatever it is, I'm sure a pest control place can sort it. Try not to worry in the meantime.

xyz111 · 17/09/2023 21:40

Sounds like mice. We stayed in a really old hotel and never heard them during the day, but kept hearing them at odd times in the night. When we told the owners, they were horrified!

autienotnaughty · 17/09/2023 22:16

I'd leave the house and start again personally 😂

dewisant2020 · 18/09/2023 15:51

Well the pest controller man has been out today, can't see any obvious signs off mice/rats.
He thinks it's more than likely mice going along the row of terraces we live in (definitely no signs in the actual house)
He's put some poison down in the floor boards & we have to see what happens now.
I just hope that helps sort my problem out. Thanks everyone who posted I've been making my self poorly with worry which isn't what I need at the moment
