Can I sort this door knocker out without replacing it?

So, the door was painted in a hurry (we forgot it would be done) and we didn't get to replace the door knocker and letter box.

Will any polish get it into a better state? I'm actually not a big fan of very bright shiny door bits, but I'd like to get it a bit more sorted if I can.

Thoughts welcome. x

It looks like it's corroded. You would need to sand the corrosion off, smooth out the surface and then possibly paint it with a metals paint. Is it actual brass or just a base metal fixture? If it's solid brass you can Google how to restore it.

Thanks! I've got no idea if it's brass. I don't think so to be honest...

Have a go at it with autosol, it comes in a tube. Put some on a rag and rub it - I'd put masking tape on the door first to protect the paint, but make sure the paint has properly cured and won't be damaged by the tape (assuming you can't remove the knocker to polish it, which would be better!)

Be aware though that if it's plated and a dull/silver metal underneath then polish could take the brass colour off completely. Maybe try a bit on an area hidden on the underneath of the bit you lift up to see how it goes.

It depends where it's from but most of these are brass and so could be repolished. You would probably need to get the lacquer off first which is a grim job and then relacquer again afterwards or it will patina down again. In all honesty, it might be cheaper to replace. Google Jedo contemporary knocker.

If I replace it now the door has been painted, will it fuck up the paint? I'm assuming so

I've done it all ass backwards, I know. I'm usually on it but I totally forgot about the door
