Messy Bath Sealant

We’ve been in our current house a couple of years and are looking to put it on the market in the next few weeks. We’ve been doing some odd jobs in advance of selling, one of which is re-sealing the bath. Over time, the sealant has started to gap and discolour and looks pretty awful.

I re-sealed it yesterday as per the usual directions online - clear out the old stuff, clean, dry, re-apply, smooth. However, I’m clearly very heavy handed and it looks a total mess - clean, sealed, better, but still untidy.

I’m loathed to call in a professional, but does anyone have any tips on how to improve this or disguise it so it looks nicer? I’ve seen bath sealing strips online that look good but reviews tend not to be great - don’t stick, etc.

Any tips, or am I going to have to get someone in to redo it?

Masking tape - above and below.
Wet your finger with soap when smoothing off the sealant.

I used a plastic teaspoon (the freebie kind) to tidy mine. I ran it in one long sweep end to end, slowly. It really worked.

I use a layer of cling film around my index finger, works brilliantly and has more control than trying to use an implement.

I used a sealant smoothing tool when I did mine. Made it look much neater

One of those yellow rubber sealant tools. We were complete novices when we redid ours and it looked fab. We did use a lot of sealant and tissue paper to wipe it off the tool but it still looked great.
One tip is to never lick your finger and use it to smooth the sealant. It introduces bacteria which causes it to go mouldy sooner.

Okay, these are grey, but this is what I mean!

Thanks all, these are great tips! I’ll give them a try tomorrow and see how I get on.
