Renting and locks

My son has just returned to uni and he and 5 others are renting a house through the uni letting services but it's privately owned. He actually only knows one of the others well.

We dropped him off and noticed there were no locks on any of the bedroom doors inside or out. How can you rent a house out licensed for multiple occupancy for 6 people and have no locks on the bedroom doors. Can we insist that they install one? His room is right by the front door and from experience I know the front door gets left on the latch often.

Not that uncommon ime. Is it definitely registered as an hmo?

Definitely a hmo, there is a certificate saying so on a notice board by the front door

If you go on to the council where he is renting from and look up the rules for that area for HMO's.
