No TV aerial socket in loft

Just had my loft converted into a master bedroom and didn’t think to ask the builders to put an aerial socket in there for a TV.

Don’t really want to have to get the lovely new walls gouged out to have one put in. I’m a complete tech idiot so be gentle but - Can I still use a TV in there? We have a Sky box downstairs - can it link to that in some way? Would I be able to get terrestrial channels?

I don’t think it would be difficult to install, you’re close to the aerial 😄

Perhaps another shy box up there if you internet can reach

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:02

Thanks @Cricketbelle - but surely it would mean channelling out the wall in some way?

If I got another Sky box, would my subscription be more expensive? Sorry for the stupid questions…

We have these things that plug in and attach to walls. They work in some houses well, a bit less so in others. They work in some parts of the room, not others. We have managed to find somewhere in both our last two houses where they both work though. About thirty quid off Amazon. Should come with a really long lead to give you positioning options, i.e. sometimes they suggest fixing them to a window or very close to one.

Signal somewhat temperamental but overall, far more good than bad.

(I sent one back the size of a credit card, it was crap)

@HelenaHandbasket84 but I don’t have any kind of tv socket in the loft?

@KievLoverTwo never seen those before - thank you!

You can get indoor aerials for free view channels or another sky box would cost £15 a month extra

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:08

@justcantgetenough £15 p/m is not bad at all - thanks!

Just get Sky multi-room if your wifi is strong enough.

Clymene · 04/09/2023 00:11

I don't use a TV aerial at all any more. I have a smart tv and everything is over wifi

HelenaHandbasket84 · 04/09/2023 00:11

It plugs into your TV aerial socket, not the wall one

CoopAndWheels · 04/09/2023 00:11

I have inherited a very smart tv that works via the downstairs WiFi . No aerial connected at all. I can’t really get my head around it. We don’t have sky anyway but watch Netflix, prime and all the usual tv and freeview channels with no issue.

cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:12

If you’ve got Sky, you can use Sky Multiscreen and a mini Sky Q box in the loft which connects wirelessly to your main Sky box. I think that’s £15 a month.

You could also get a smart TV or an Amazon FireStick and just watch TV through the internet - BBC iPlayer app has the live BBC channels, ITVX has the ITV channels live etc.

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:13

Oh I see @HelenaHandbasket84 - god, I feel thick!!

Another thick question - if I get another Sky box/Sky multi room, would that include the usual terrestrial channels - could I watch them live?

@cherryassam looks like you’ve answered my last question! Thanks!

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:15

What would you all do if you were me? Just use one of the various Sky options PPs have mentioned or get someone to install a socket?

OP posts:
cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:17

My answer would depend on how good your WiFi is up in the loft - or do you have Ethernet sockets in the wall?

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:21

Don’t have ethernet sockets. Internet is pretty good

OP posts:
cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:22

Okay if the internet is decent - do you already have a TV to use up there?

cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:25

If you do, I’d buy an Amazon FireStick and see how you get on with using the apps to watch live TV

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:25

Not yet - I’d need to buy a new one

OP posts:
cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:25

If you don’t like doing that, then I’d consider going for the Sky option

cherryassam · 04/09/2023 00:26

Okay so I’d go for a smart TV that you can download the apps on and give them a go before committing to an extra Sky box or putting in sockets

WhamBamMam85 · 04/09/2023 00:28

Thank you @cherryassam

If you need to buy a new telly, get a smart one and you're all sorted. I still have a freeview box but I don't use it.
