Someone seems to have gone out of their way to grow ivy

Plant it, ignore it, it covers the house. You have to go out of your way to keep it in check - something these owners haven't done as the windows make evident.

I didn't think it was any problem for sound brickwork, although if you pull it down you'll never get the root bits off.

It’s very flat and quire unattractive countryside around there. Not many people, everything a bit run down and neglected, probably not many jobs.

This is what the area is most famous for

I think they demolished the final two towers last year.

We gave serious consideration to buying a house not far last year. In the end we decided the topography and lack of stuff to do would depress us too much.

What exactly did you expect from a village of 1500 in a largely decimated part of the country with arable farming as its industry and reason for being - scaleable peaks?

pilates · 27/08/2023 04:21

I would worry about the brickwork.

And that spiral staircase looks lethal. How did that pass building regs?

MaryJanesonabreak · 27/08/2023 04:55

If you want to host rats in your attic you can help them out by growing a lovely Ivy ladder all the way up to the rafters.

daisychain01 · 27/08/2023 05:07

Ivy definitely can damage brickwork and pointing, mainly when you try to strip it back. If you look at how ivy adheres itself to a wall it has tiny rootlike suckers so when you try to take it off, the pointing can come away with it or at least it degrades the integrity of the pointing. Anyone who allows that much ivy to grow up their house and get into the guttering doesn't have a clue about how to look after their most valuable asset (apart from their children lol)

I know the area, and it is very much in sticks. I actually thought it is over priced.

I do like the creeper it gives it character. but definitely needs keeping on top of.

The spiders! Imagine the spiders.

I quite like the ivy! But why do people not get appliances built in? That washing machine ruins the look of the whole kitchen!

That’s the most outrageously snobby thing anyone has ever said! According to dd, I agree 100%

Ivy removal video shorts. Very satisfying and I can almost feel the house sign with relief as it's taken off!

Assuming the right plant is chosen to prevent damage to the brickwork and its looked after properly this is a good idea for helping to keep homes cooler in future hotter summers.

I was explaining to PP why it was a cheap place to live.

Having never been there before, I had no expectations.

You can’t have it both ways, saying new builds looking sterile and then when someone softens the look with planting you’re still don’t like it! Houses and streets develop their character and personality over many years, the other houses will develop in time like any other street.

Yeah, but normally by street trees and hedges maturing.

I bet their neighbours love them with it creeping past their garage onto their property too.

That would indeed be useful...except we have had no summer this year!

Or at least in the NE we have had about five days out of three months without rain :(

Photo 18, you'd think the neighbor would be ok with trimming the whole top of the hedge yes? Makes me think there could be neighbour wars.

cameldigits · 27/08/2023 07:26

Have you seen the street view image?

Omg

It clearly is high maintenance

cameldigits · 27/08/2023 07:28

It looks bloody awful

I wonder how easy it is to remove?

partypompoms · 27/08/2023 07:30

Love the ivy but hate the trees in the front garden.

Because when my dishwasher caught fire (apparently a design fault the engineer said he had seen so many of them) the only thing that saved the entire kitchen going up in flames was that we could pull the thing out to put the fire out.

I'd never do integrated.

Is this the house of someone you know op, or just a random house from Rightmove that has a feature you don't like?

Valerie23 · 27/08/2023 07:42

It's absolutely hideous.

Someone seems to have gone out of their way to grow ivy over this new build property
tanstaafl · 27/08/2023 08:02

Anyone else notice the Bentley and Porsche Boxster in next door’s garden?
Street view offers up an Aston Martin, horse box and motor home!

saraclara · 27/08/2023 08:08

As someone who has Virginia creeper climbing up most of the rear of my house, and, horror of horrors, has a free-standing washing machine, I don't understand the problem.

Don't know the owner.

I'm not keen on Ivy, doesn't it attach itself to the brickwork and cause damage?
