What kind of Bathroom in 1950's house?

My house is typical 1950's. I am doing the Bathroom and like the lovely ones in the big Victorian properties. Is there a way to get the look without it looking stupid? If not any suggestions?

Don't put subway tiles or black hardwear (ware?) in it.

Ours are tongue and grooved and painted white and it never really ages.

Square tiles in a pastel colour and one of those recessed soap dishes? Coloured sanitary ware?

Im not one for pastel colours - They are all in at the moment but because of my age I still remember the 70's pastel bathroom suits from first time around. My firend recently had hers done in a blush pink and it is beauiful but not for me.

Find a local plumbing merchants that sells bathroom suites and go for a browse.

I was blown away by how much choice there was compared to your standard DIY chains.

We took measurements in and sat with a designer. He worked out what would fit in the space we had and advised what would be compatible with our boiler system etc.

If you have an idea of tiles you like they can help you choose a suite to suit your look, but we went back and forth to the plumbers merchants for 2 or 3 weeks and kept tweaking until we were ready to order.
