Wtf is this all about them

I’m very very bored on a non moving train so forgive me if this is the erstwhile home of your much loved great aunt (recently deceased, good rest her soul, tho it’s possible she’s going to the dark place after than incident in the 60s).

I just don’t understand this. It’s a studio flat with a separate room across a corridor which houses the kitchen. Which is weird, right? And I thought it was just one of those weird London anomalies, but there are two!! For sale just now.

Please explain to me, oh wise ones: wtf is this all about?

Expensive and yet largely pointless flat of weirdness

Check out this Studio apartment for sale on Rightmove

It's very cute and well located. I can see Poirot living there, with Hastings in the scullery

User5653218 · 24/08/2023 20:23

I dont understand. Does across the hall mean you leave your living room, cross a communal hallway and go into your kitchen? How weird.

But beautiful entrance. I've walked past it and wished Iived there before.

Clefable · 24/08/2023 20:24

£325k! And your kitchen isn't even part of your flat!

You can't put Hastings in the scullery!

SaturdayGiraffe · 24/08/2023 20:25

Converted from custodial closets?

Clefable · 24/08/2023 20:25

It is a very grand entrance. That chair plonked down looks a bit Guantanamo Bay interrogation room meets Downton Abbey though

BringMeTea · 24/08/2023 20:29

Poirot wouldn't be seen dead in that!

Meadowdog · 24/08/2023 20:32

It's perfect for getting me to follow my diet! could hang around naked in the main bit and then would have to get dressed just to be able to go across to the kitchen. Since I'm lazy I would snack way less.

Mamette · 24/08/2023 20:34

Only 2.5k service charge per annum

ErrolTheDragon · 24/08/2023 20:35

Probably it was originally configured differently - perhaps they were intended as pied a terre for gentlemen who didn't cook for themselves?

Belltentdreamer · 24/08/2023 20:36

Maybe I’ve lived in London too long. Seems good value for the location 🤣
it’s obviously not going to be someone’s main home - will be used by someone who works in London on some week days I would imagine

Maryqueenofstots · 24/08/2023 20:38

It’s just the having to leave to get a cup of tea that blows my mind. The other one has a kitchenette in situ and a Utility across the corridor, which kind of makes more sense!

However, £40k more expensive.

How does the leasehold even work? Two separate ones?

I could junk my premier inn habit and buy it, installing DH across the corridor for an occasional nocturnal visit. Like having an affair with your own DH. I could call him Hastings @Doggymummar !

This might be it. But surely those types just stay at their Club?

That wee shithole costs more than my four bed detached 😮

Saz12 · 24/08/2023 20:43

I rented a flat with that arrangement about 25 years ago! Had kitchen & sofa on one side of landing, and the bedroom and bathroom the other side. Top floor, attic type, anyone could access the landing. Was v cheap rent, but a total pita.

LadyLapsang · 24/08/2023 20:52

It might suit an MP, late sittings and restaurants and bars on site.

CinnamonSodaPop · 24/08/2023 20:52

I used to date a guy who rented 4 rooms in the middle of a 3 storey house. Bedrooms on one side with locks. Lounge/kitchen and bathroom on the other side. Communal staircase running through the middle. Not much fun if you needed the loo in the night, possibility of bumping into the upstairs guy! And no locks on the lounge or bathroom outer, to stop people wandering in!

Maryqueenofstots · 24/08/2023 20:53

Add a kitchenette to the main room and you could create a fantastic home bar in the room of requirement!

This gives me the heebiejeebies.

i once hired an exclusive use apartment on booking, for when I was in Dublin on business. It was exclusive use of the basement apartment, but it was open up the stairs to the main house, with a wee half glass gate across the barrier.

If I wandered around from the bedroom to the bathroom in the scud the teenager upstairs could see all. Shudder.

I thought the same!

MerryBeard · 24/08/2023 21:03

I can't work out what the servery is. Is it a little hatch that you pass the dinner through into the hall way? Why?

ChristmasKraken · 24/08/2023 21:07

I reckon it's for doing business in rather than living in. Nip across to the kitchen for a tea break. Not sure what sort if business just needs a large room and a bathroom mind...

Same here! I work near there and had a fleeting dream about reducing my commute to a 5mins walk! 🫠
